      3. Cora's age given as fraction, 5/12. "Jan" is month of birth.
      4. It's sometimes fascinating to look at the data and wonder who gave the information to the enumerator. Someone knew that Horace's family was from New York and Vermont, but otherwise couldn't get his parents' birthplaces right. Mary's parents from Pennsylvania? Probably that's the mysterious Renslow connection to Pennsylvania again, rather than Mary's family. This is the only record I know of that shows Nathan's name as "Nathaniel." Our unnamed informant knew that Horace and Mary were "from" Illinois, and thought they had been born there. A neighbor, maybe? I'd bet that the enumerator got all the local gossip, too.

      1. "Harris" is a phonetic rendering of "Horace." Many years ago, my uncle (Ed Renslow) told me how his grandfather pronounced his name: Hahr-iss.
      2. A 44 year marriage for Horace & Mary means married in 1866 (or late1865), after birth of Viola. A figure of this age isn't necessarily reliable, but because married folks usually relate marriage year with birth year of a child, the 44-year figure may be credible.
      3. Mary is reported as having given birth to nine children, all living. I know of only eight. She may have had a child before Viola from a first husband, but where was this child in 1870 census?
      4. This census is the last record of Benjamin that I know of. Has anyone seen a later record of Benjamin?
      5. Cecil's age was given as fraction, 11/12.
      6. Tomas Davis's father is from New Jersey, meaning there's a possibility that he's a cousin to Horace (English family).
      7. There are numerals written in the right hand columns of four lines, starting with the Farm Schedule column. Apparently, these numeral have nothing do to with the labeled purpose of the columns. The numerals are:

      I have no record of Mary being married before she married Horace, do you?
      I am very exasperated with one of my stupid mistakes! I do have nine children listed for Horace and Mary, but have only eight entered into my data base. I have an Edward on my group sheet with a question mark and was not sure enough about him to enter him in the data base. My stupid mistake is that I have no idea where I got that name!! I have no notes on him, just a question mark!!
      So, I don't know whether they had an Edward or not. If I run across something in my other notes, I'll let you know.

I have records. The problem is that Cole and Shephard are such common names that I can't tell if all the records I have are for the Mary Jane who married Horace Renslow.

Pearl Ledford was born circa 1883 in Leadville, Lake County, Colorado.¹ She married Nathaniel [Nathan or Nate] Holt Renslow, Sr., on circa 1905. Pearl died on 1906, in Charleston, Bradley County, Tennessee, at age ~23. According to one source, she probably died in childbirth while bearing Holt, or soon thereafter.

Alfred Lawrence Renslow and Martha Jane Renslow appeared on the census of 1920 in Civil District 2, Bradley County, Tennessee, which lists Alford [sic] Renslow, 20, born in Colorado, father born in Illinois, mother born in Colorado; his wife Martha, 22, born in Tennessee, both parents also born in Tennessee; and their son Lawrence, 9 months, born in Tennessee.⁷ He was a farmer in 1920.⁷

Alfred Lawrence Renslow appeared on the census of 1930 in Cleveland, Bradley County, Tennessee, which lists Alyre [sic, should be Alfred] Renslow, 30, born in Colorado, both parents born in Tennessee; his wife Martha J., 32, born in Tennessee, father born in North Carolina, mother born in Tennessee; and their children, Lawrence A., 10, Lake, 8, and Bettie J., 2 years, 8 months, all born in Tennessee.² He was a moulder in a stove factory in 1930.²

Easther was born on 29 December 1903 in Charleston, Bradley County, Tennessee.^1,2 She married on 16 April 1916.² Easther died on 6 June 1928, at age 24.^3,4,2

Nathan was born on 27 February 1906 in Charleston, Bradley County, Tennessee.^1,1,2,1 He married Ruby Ann Gibson on 5 October 1922 in Cleveland, Bradley County, Tennessee. or 5 December.² He married Lennie Mae Palmer on 24 June 1924.^2,3 Nathan died on 15 February 1974, in Cleveland, Bradley County, Tennessee, at age 67.^2,1 His body was interred on February 1974 at in Fort Hill Cemetery, Cleveland, Bradley County, Tennessee.

Nathan Holt Renslow, Jr., appeared on the census of 1910 in the household of Nathaniel [Nathan or Nate] Holt Renslow, Sr., and Mary (Mamie) Renslow in Civil District 2, Bradley County, Tennessee, which lists Nate Renslow, 34, born in Illinois, both parents born in Pennsylvania; his wife Frances, 24, born in Tennessee, father born in Tennessee, mother born in US; his son Alfred from his first marriage to Mamie O'Connor, 10, born in Colorado, father born in Illinois, mother born in Tennessee; their children (all born in Tennessee) Irene, 7, Holt, 4, and Jake, 11 months [Query: Why is Jake's father, presumably Nate, listed as born in United States, not Illinois as is the father of the other two children?]; and Frances' brother, George Long, 20, born in Tennessee.⁴ His Social Security Number was 413-10-9083, issued before 1951 in Tennessee.¹ According to the Social Security Death Index, Nathan's last residence was in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee.¹
