Biography

Fred was born on 22 March 1868 in Magnolia, Rock County, Wisconsin.1

Fred Lester Janes married Mabel Snashall on 26 June 1901 in Evansville, Rock County, Wisconsin. From the Janesville Daily Gazette - Janesville, Wisconsin - June 15 1901: Mr. and Mrs. Albert Snashall of Evahsville have issued invitations for the marriage of their daughter, Miss Mabel Snashall and Fred L. Janes. The ceremony will be solemnized at the home of the bride.
From The Wisconsin Tobacco Reporter, June 28 1901: The marriage of Miss Mabel Snashall and Mr Fred L Janes, was solemnized at the home of the bride’s parents Wednesday afternoon [26 June 1901] at 4 o’clock.
The bride is one of Evansville’s most
popular young ladies and is a member of
one of the prominent families in this
city. Mr Janes holds a high position in
social and professional circles, being a
prosperous young lawyer. Fred died on 31 January 1953, at age 84.1 He was buried in Maple Hill Cemetery, Evansville, Rock County, Wisconsin.1

Fred Lester Janes appeared on the census of 1880 in Magnolia Township, Rock County, Wisconsin.2 He was graduated in 1896 in Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin, from the University of Wisconsin Law School. He was an attorney.

The 24 June 1946 issue of the Evansville -- or Janesville (Rock County, Wisconsin) newspaper carried the following story:

Fred Janes, Evansville, Son of Earliest Arrival Here, 50 Years a Lawyer on July 1 [1946]

Fred L. Janes, Evansville lawyer and a member of the family for which Janesville was named, will on July 1 [1946] celebrate his 50th anniversary as an attorney. The dean of the legal profession in the county is believed to be the oldest practicing attorney in Rock county, as well as oldest in years [78 years?].
Mr. Janes' father, Chester Janes, came to the spot where Janesville now stands in 1836 with his famous cousin Henry F. Janes, who established a tavern here, became the first postmaster, and gave his name to the community.
Through a half-century of law practice, the Evansville man always occupied the same office in what is known as the Marshall J. Fisher building at 16 East Main Street. He attended Evansville seminary after the family moved to Evansville from its Magnolia township farm when he was 16 [about 1883?]. Thereafter he went to the University of Wisconsin and was graduated from its law school in 1896 [when he was about 28 years old?].
He was one of 16 who attended the 50th annual reunion in Madison [Wisconsin] this year. Out of 98 in the class, fewer than 40 survive, he said. He has for many years specialized in probate court practice. Mr. and Mrs. Janes reside at 42 North Second Street. They are parents of two sons, Lawrence, residing on a farm near Evansville, and Burton C., Evansville insurance man.

    Death: Jan. 31, 1953

Researched and Written By Ruth Ann Montgomery:
"The attorney, Fred Janes, was well known in Evansville. He had moved to the city with his family from their farm in Magnolia township when he was sixteen years old and had attended the Evansville Seminary. In 1901, Janes married Mabel Snashall, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Snashall, and for the rest of his life, Janes lived in Evansville.
Fred Janes' father, Chester Janes, was a New Yorker who had moved to Janesville in 1836 with his cousin, Henry Janes. Chester was just 18 and ready for a western adventure. His cousin, Henry, became the first postmaster in that city and so the community was named for him. Henry later moved west and founded other Janesvilles in Minnesota and California. It was a mark of distinction for Evansville's Janes family. Evansville's Janes family preferred to stay in the area and once settled in his business location, Fred Janes never moved his law practice. He stayed in the same building for fifty years. In the 1930s he became a partner with his son, Burton "Dusty" Janes, in the insurance business. When he retired in 1946, Fred Janes was the oldest practicing attorney in Rock County and considered the "dean" of the legal profession in the area." [courtesy of Ruth Ann Montgomery]

CAVEAT: Several online websites claim that Jesse Chapman's parents were John Chapman, Sr. - #1715 (1751-1814) and Rachel Jackson - #9798 (1752-1781), but apparently there are not any sources that support that claim. That breaks this direct family line to me.
