Soren was born on 15 September 1860 in Hov, Sennels (Parish), Hillerslev (District), Thisted (County), Denmark.¹

Soren Christian ('Chris") Poulsen married Hansine Hansen, daughter of Hans Hansen and Caroline???, circa 1886 in Wahpeton, Richland County, North Dakota. Apparently 8 children were born to Chris and Hansine in Wahpeton. Three lived to be adults (Adolph, Belinda and Henry) and three infant sons are buried in the Riverside Cemetery south of Wahpeton.²
Soren Christian ('Chris") Poulsen died on 12 December 1920 in Willmar, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, at age 60. The cause of death was chronic diffuse nephritis and pulmonary endema, duration one day. [Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, Deaths, Book D, Page 139, Line 241] The death records give his name as "Soran C. Paulson", estimate his birth year as 1861, his age as 59, list his occupation as "none", state that he was born in Denmark and do not list his parents' names. He was apparently a patient at the Minnesota State Hospital in Willmar, Minnesota, at the time of his death.

.³ He was buried in Crystal Lake Cemetery, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota.

Soren Christian ('Chris") Poulsen was also known as Soren Christian ('Chris") Paulson. Soren Christian ('Chris") Poulsen appeared on the census of 1 February 1880 in Snedsted (Parish0, Hassing (District), Thisted (County), Denmark, Caveat: It is not certain that he is "our" SorenPoulsen because his birthplace in the 1880 census does not appear to be Sennels.⁶ He emigrated circa 1882 from Denmark to the United States, arriving in New York on 14 August 1882 on the ship Thingvalla. CAVEAT: This may not the the correct Soren Poulsen because his occupation is listed a a clerk.^2,7 He was a blacksmith, single and apparently living in a boarding house with other men on 1 June 1885.⁸

He knows just what the farmers want, and is manufacturing and disposing of an astonishing number of them. They was a witness at Adam Emile Van Buren and Ane Marie Poulsen's wedding 21 August 1895 in Wahpeton, Richland County, North Dakota.^10,11

They had been married 14 years, since about 1886. Hansine had given birth to 8 children, only 3 of whom were living.² He was a blacksmith in 1900.²

The funeral will be held Wednesday [15 December 1920] at 2:00 from Engers Locale (?), 412 Cedar Avenue [Minneapolis]; burial at Crystal Lake Cemetery [Minneapolis].

Hansine was born on 8 October 1862 in Alstahaug, Sandness, Nordland, Norway. She married Soren Christian ('Chris") Poulsen on circa 1886 in Wahpeton, Richland County, North Dakota.¹ Hansine died on 31 August 1935, in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, at age 72.² She was buried in Crystal Lake Cemetery, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota.

Hansine Hansen emigrated circa 1884 from Norway to Dwight, North Dakota (just west of Wahpeton, North Dakota).¹ They was a witness at Adam Emile Van Buren and Ane Marie Poulsen's wedding 21 August 1895 in Wahpeton, Richland County, North Dakota.^3,4

Hansine Paulson and Soren Christian ('Chris") Poulsen appeared on the census of 1900 in 129 Second Street, Wahpeton, Richland County, North Dakota, which listed Soren C Paulson, 39, born September 1860, in Denmark (emigrated to USA in 1882), Hancina [sic, Hansine] Paulson, 37, born October 1862, in Norway (emigrated to USA in 1884), and thier children, Adolph C Paulson, 12, born January 1888 [1887], in North Dakota, Belinda M Paulson, 7, born December 1892, in North Dakota, and Henry M Paulson, 1, born August 1898 [1897], in North Dakota. They had been married 14 years, since about 1886. Hansine had given birth to 8 children, only 3 of whom were living.¹

Her husband, Soren, died on 12 December 1920 in Willmar, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, at age 60, leaving her a widow. The cause of death was chronic diffuse nephritis and pulmonary endema, duration one day. [Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, Deaths, Book D, Page 139, Line 241] The death records give his name as "Soran C. Paulson", estimate his birth year as 1861, his age as 59, list his occupation as "none", state that he was born in Denmark and do not list his parents' names. He was apparently a patient at the Minnesota State Hospital in Willmar, Minnesota, at the time of his death.

Christen Poulsen (1862-1919) and Ane Kirstine Christoffersen (1866-1936) had 13 children, two of whom (Emma, 1898-1900 and Anders, 1912) died in infancy. Five of their other 11 children (Mette, Poul, Ingeman, Kristoffer and Lars) emigrated to the United States and went to Iowa. Kristoffer died in Iowa, but the other four (Mette, Poul, Ingeman and Lars) all later returned to Denmark for the remainder of their lives. Six of Christen and Ane’s 13 children (Kristen, Johanne, Viggo, Anker, Elna and Harald) did not emigrate to the United States and lived in Denmark all of their lives.

Otto Poulsen emigrated in 1891 from Denmark to the United States. Anton, 20, Otto, 19, and Nikoline, 14, Poulsen left Denmark on contract 134500 on 12 May 1891 on the ship Hekla bound for New York, arriving on 29 May 1891. Their final destination was Wahpeton, North Dakota, where their brother Soren (Chris) Paulson had emigrated around 1882.^11,12

He was a Private in Company I, 2nd Regiment of the First North Dakota Voluntary Infantry in the Spanish-American War. The regiment was mustered into the federal service at Fargo, North Dakota, between May 13 and 16, 1898. At the time of mustering in, the regiment consisted of twenty-seven offices and 658 enlisted men. The regiment departed Fargo on May 26, 1898, bound for San Francisco, California, where it arrived four days later. On June 28, 1898, the regiment boarded the transport INDIANA (Co. H only) and VALENCIA (remaidner of the regiment) bound for Manila, in the Philippine Islands.

After over a month at sea, stopping briefly at Hawaii, the regiment arrived in the Philippines on July 31, 1898, and was assigned to General Arthur MacArthur's 1st Brigade of the 2nd Division of the 8th Army Corps (interestingly, at that time there was only one division in the corps, and it was the second, not the first). After participating in the attack and capture of Manila on August 13, 1898, the First North Dakota performed garrison and outpost duty at Malate. An Armistice was reached with Spain on August 12, 1898, the same day Manila fell (since it is on the opposite side of the International date Line) ending the fighting. The regiment was transfered to the Second Brigade, First Division, 8th Army Corps on October 14, 1898. The Spanish American War officially ended on December 10, 1898, with the signing of the Treaty of Paris.

The Philippine American War broke out on February 4, 1899. After taking part in the actions around Manila on February 4 and 5, 1898, the regiment went on to fight in many skirmishes and battles including Paranque, San Pedro Road, Maibay, English Cemetery, Culi Culi, Kings Bluff, San Bartolome/Novaliches, Tabac/San Rafael, Titban, Bustos, San Isidro, San Fernando, Cabiao, Cainta, Taytay, Angona, and Morong. The regiment was transfered to the First Brigade, First Division, 8th Army Corps on March 17, 1899. The regiment departed the Philippines on the transport GRANT on July 30, 1899, after being in the Philippines for almost exactly one year, arriving in San Francisco on August 29, 1899.

The regiment was mustered out of service on September 25, 1899, at San Francisco. At the time of mustering out, the regiment consisted of thirty-one officers, and 507 enlisted men. The regiment had 6 enlisted men killed in action, and one man who later died of his wounds. In addition, nine men died from disease, one man drowned, and one man was killed in an accident. One officer was wounded in action as were thirteen enlisted men. Eighteen men were discharged on disability. The regiment suffered no desertions.^13,5

Niels Peter and Dorthea (Poulsen) Simonsen and their two young children, Paul (born in 1894) and Inger (born in 1896), left Denmark on contract 20100, sailing from Kristiansand on 25 March 1898 on the ship Island [Norge?]. They arrived at Ellis Island on 7 April 1898, en route to Wahpeton, North Dakota, where Dorthea's siblings Soren (Chris), Anton, Otto and Ane (Anna) lived.
