Notes.
1. Harry's father is from Switzerland? But, Harry's a barber from Minnesota. Don't we have a family of barbers in Minnesota? Harry A. Renslow is the same age as Hibbard A. Renslow. Hibbard was a barber in Minnesota, and I don't know where he was in 1920. Incidently, Hibbard's mother's maiden name was Boyle, and the Boyles hail from Ireland.
2. The two W's at the end of the last two lines apparently mean "works," in other words, an employee, which both men are.
3. Lawrence's father is shown as born in Finland, mother tongue Finnish. This wouldn't apply to Harry. I gather that Lawrence's actual relationship to Harry is step-son.
4. Lawrence was born in Minnesota, which suggests that May had lived in Minnesota, and that Harry and May may have met in Minnesota before moving to Washington.

1. In column for "Employer, employee, or works on own account," Ward and Leonard both have a W.
2. In the margin after the end of Ward's line is the number 654. I don't know what it means.
3. Ward is a gatetender at a "ry crossing." I take ry to mean "railroad," or perhaps, "railway."
4. Could it be that Ward's father (Kelly Renslow 1823-?) was born in Pennsylvania?6

I have a copy of Myrtle's Social Security application and it states that her father was Ward P. Renslow and her mother was Jennie R. Montgomery. Myrtle died at Patrick Henry Hospital in Newport News, Virginia, on 3 Jul 1978 at the age of 79. I have conflicting birth dates for her -- 23 Jan 1899 or 23 Jan 1900. I still have a great deal to do with this family -- so many unanswered questions. She was married to Chris Christensen. I should send you a GedCom File. I have a copy of the 1930 census from North Dakota, and she was previously married to a Hanson and had one known son, Frederick Hanson who was listed as being age 8 years in 1930. Then she married Chris Christensen and had other children.

Dixie & Paul,
In searching some family history, I found the information included below.
Myrtle Renslow & Chris Christensen we believe to be my husband, Dwight's grandparents. His dad was Ward Philo Christensen, born June 22,1928 - died March 1, 1993. On Ward's birth certificate it stated that he was the 4th child born to Myrtle Renslow. What we are actually interested in is a date & place for the marriage of Myrtle & Chris. Also Frederick Hanson, a child born to Myrtle during her 1st marriage - your information stated he was still living and to contact you for more info. Would you have any current info for him? Anything you can share with us will be appreciated.
Thank you,
Dwight & Wendy Christensen

Paul,
We have not heard anything from anyone. We ran across some more info, that wasn't filed with our other things.
We have 2 spellings for Ward's father from Ward's birth cert.
Ward Philo Christensen, born 6-22-28 in Michigan, Nelson County, North Dakota; died 3-1-93 in Fargo, Cass County, North Dakota, age 64
Chris Christensen born in Atlantic, Cass County, Iowa, age 43
Myrtle Agnes Renslow born Sugar Grove, Wisconsin, age 27
From a Death registration from Clerk of Court, Nelson County, Lakota, North Dakota:
Christ Christenson DOB 2-21-1883 Birth place Auderbon, Iowa
Date of Death 2-14-33, age 49
Father's Name Andrew Christenson born in Denmark
Mother's Name ??? Michelson born in Denmark
We also have copies of juvenile court documents involving Ward as a child, that give information about Myrtle's marriage to a Pat Hanson on August 12, 1922, and that they had no children. The information involves children she had and her other supposed marriages. I'm thinking that's probably more information then you wanted.
If you want to add Ward's 2 brothers(that we know of) to your info this is what we know.
George Christensen DOB 11-17-1929, now deceased sometime between 1982 & 1986; was living in Newport News, Virginia. That's where Myrtle died.
James Christensen DOB 9-27-1927 (still living - last known address Andalusia, IL)
I do wish we would hear from Dixie Lee Brodigan.
Thank you again for your time and interest

Thank you for your message. I have entered your info into my data base which will appear the next time that I upload to the internet. I do have a few observations/questions:
1. We apparently have several possible birthdates for Myrtle Agnes Renslow -- all around 1899 to 1901. But I found her as Myrtle Christensen in the Social Security Death Index (SSN 227-92-5994) with her birthdate of 23 January 1899.
2. We have a couple of birthdates and places for Chris/Christ Christensen. I suspect that his parents' surnames were probably spelled Christensen and Michelsen, being Danish.
3. According to Dixie Lee Brodigan, Myrtle Renslow and Pat??? Hanson had at least one child, Frederick Hanson, born around 1922.
4. I found George Christensen in the Social Security Death Index (SSN 502-32-7301). He apparently died in April 1984.
Genealogy is full of mysteries!

Paul,
Thank you for your information. We had noticed the 2 different birth dates for Myrtle. This is partly why we'd like to hear from Dixie...to find out where her information came from.
Our court documents Dated 4th day of March, 1938 state that:
Myrtle's oldest child Robert was born Dec. 25, 1920, and Frederick Long of Jamestown, ND, was the father (Birth verified). Then on August 12, 1922 , she (Myrtle) married Pat Hanson, who deserted her; they had no children. There is no records of a divorce or the death (at that time) of Mr. Hanson. Mrs. Christensen's relatives who were contacted think is still alive and living in South Dakota. Ward, George, & James, are the children of Christ Christenson, to whom Myrtle Christensen was supposed to have been married on Sept. 27, 1927. There is no record of this marriage, and Myrtle finally admitted that she was not legally married to him [Chris Christensen]. He had a wife living from whom he had not been divorced, and she, Myrtle, had no notification of her husband's [Pat Hanson] death, and she had no divorce. Mr. Christensen died in Lakota, ND, in Feb. 1933, since which time Myrtle has been on relief. The court papers also stated that she admitted to being pregnant again and who the father was.
Then in another court document, dated the 19th day of August, 1942:
Ward, George, James, & Charles Christenson are children under the age of eighteen years, to wit, of the age of 14, 13, 11, and 4 years, etc. The mother has had four illegitimate children, and she is unable to properly control or discipline said children.
Nothing was said about the oldest child (Robert) in thiis document, and on Ward's birth certificate it states that he was her fourth child. We're guessing she made an effort to leave out any information they (the Court) didn't know. When James came for Ward's funeral, he did mention a younger [older?] brother, but wasn't sure where he was. The Clerk of Court did mention finding some information involving adoption, but could not legally give that to us.
I don't believe Ward ever mentioned any brothers other than George and Jim. Dwight and his dad [Ward] were never very close. Ward was gone for sometime while Dwight was young. Dwight and I were married Dec. 11, 1982. I had a 9 yr. old son (Kory) and Dwight adopted him on Feb. 16, 1983. After Dwight's Mom (Christine) died in March of 1983, we didn't see much of Ward. The last time I remember seeing him alive was in the fall of 1984, and I was pregnant with his grandson, Jared. We also had a daughter, Destinee. Ward only saw pictures of them. Dwight has become a wonderful loving husband and father.
I apologize for once again sharing more then you probably wanted to know. But the more researching we do, the more questions we have. Thank you again for your time and we'll be in touch if we hear from anyone else.

Well, this is all very fascinating! :-) Some people have really interesting lives!
Following up on Dixie's lead, I checked the 1930 census, and here is what I found:
The 1930 U.S. Census for Sarnia Township, Nelson County, North Dakota, lists Chris Christensen, age 45, born in Iowa, both parents born in Denmark; his wife Myrtle A. Christensen [born Myrtle Agnes Renslow], age 29, born in Illinois, father born in New Jersey [but Ward Philo Renslow was apparently born in New York], mother born in Minnesota [but Jennie Black was apparently born in Wisconsin]; a son Leslie, age 9, born in Wisconsin, father born in Iowa, mother born in Minnesota [apparently Chris Christensen's first wife]; a son Ward P., age 1 1/12, born in North Dakota, father born in Iowa, mother born in Illinois; a son George C., age 5/12, born in North Dakota, father born in Iowa, mother born in Illinois; and a step-son Frederick Hanson, age 8, born in North Dakota, father [Frederick Long or Pat Hanson?] born in Minnesota, mother born in Illinois. Questions:
1. What happened to Myrtle's first son, Robert, born in 1920? Adopted away?
2. Who is this Frederick Hanson, born about 1922? Did Myrtle and Pat Hanson have a son? Or is he really Robert, with the age and name changed to protect the innocent?
3. Where is James Christensen, born in 1927?
Is not genealogy fascinating? And time-consuming? :-)
I have not shared your info with the Renslow group, but you may want to do so.

Paul,
Fascinating? YES! We're feeling a little overwhelmed and maybe confused, by all the information. I still can't believe that the first time I typed in Myrtle's name, all this information was there. I actually started my search at www.stateofillinois.com. Dwight will be interested to see your latest info. Last night when we had a chance to talk, he did say his dad (Ward) had talked about 2? older brothers, but never names. He thought one was in Calif. (But that info was from when Dwight was young). They must have been from Chris' 1st marriage.
I went back to the Ancestry.com and checked the information you had added. When you listed Chris & Myrtle's children, you listed James 1st. Is that because he's listed as still living? James' was not born in 1927 as you have below (question #3); he was born Sept. 20, 1931. Did you have a birth date for Frederick Hanson before our information added to the confusion?
Also from your information, we've discovered that both of Myrtle's parents died in Jamestown, ND, and her mother is buried in Highland Home Cemetery. We can hardly wait for Spring so we can check that out. Jamestown is just 60 miles from us.
Once again, "THANK YOU!" for your interest, time and information. We've really appreciated everything and look forward to keeping in touch with you.
Dwight & Wendy.
