A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Mary Loyola, 78, a language teacher in schools of the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo, will be offered at 9 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Mount St. Mary’s Convent, 3756 Delaware Ave., Town of Tonawanda. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda.
Sister Loyola died Wednesday (June 5, 1985) in the convent.
Sister Loyola taught 55 years, specializing in Latin, French and Spanish. She was assigned to Mount St. Mary’s Academy and the old St. Mary’s Seminary and Annunciation High School. She was a principal at the academy and an associate principal at Cardinal O’Hara High School.
The former Kathryn Haughton was born in VanKleek Hill, Ont. and joined the Sisters of St. Mary o Namur in 1929 in Buffalo. She graduated from the Ottawa Normal School in Canada and held bachelor’s and master’s degrees, respectively, from Canisius College and Catholic University. Surviving are a sister, Sister Louise, and a brother, Dr. Thomas J. Haughton of Regina, Saskatchewan.

From grandson Pete Romeo, 2025: About 45 years ago, my father, John Francis Romeo, received a letter from Paddy and David Haughton of Waterford, Ireland, asking if Mary Haughton was his mother. He answered yes she was and they began a long correspondence. Eventually my parents visited them several times (they were in their late 70's at the time).
Paddy & David lived in their family's pub and (as I understand the story) left the pub to my father after they died. My father then turned the pub over to a family that had been helping Paddy and David (again this is how I heard the story).
