She was born July 23, 1914, in Greensburg, Ky., and came to Sarasota 38 years ago from Ocala. She was co-owner of Mel's Furniture Store in Sarasota. She retired in 1971. She was a Presbyterian and member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Lakeland.

Survivors include a daughter, Deborah J. of Sarasota; three sisters, Elizabeth Ratcliffe of Campbellsville, Ky., Ruth Baur of Bryan, Texas, and Mary Barclay of Tampa; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Toale Brothers, Gulf Gate Chapel. The service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel at Bee Ridge Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Sarasota Memorial Park.

HOUGHTON, Virginia “Bardi” Kemp, passed away Friday, October 2nd, 1998, in her home in Northridge, California. She was 82.
Born in Hollywood, California, Bardi devoted her life first to family and then to art, predominantly oil painting and sculpting. She was preceded in death oy her husband of 56 years, Robert A. Houghton, who passed away at the end of last December. Beloved mother to Ray Liebke and Robin Bell; grandmother to Karen, Steve, Kimber, Bob, David and Paul; and great grandmother to Kali, Kirstyn, Boyd and Brock, Bardi was a gentle soul filled with love and talent. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

He was a member of Murfreesboro Baptist Church, member and past master of American George Masonic Lodge, No. 17, Murfreesboro, member of the Roanoke Chowan Shrine Club, Sudan Shrine Temple, New Bern, N.C., Murfreesboro Exchange Club, and Murfreesboro Historical Association.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Fowler Houghton; two stepsons, Joe White of Greenville, Travis White of Murfreesboro; and a stepbrother, Robert H. Blanford, of Mont Rose, Mich.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Murfreesboro Baptist Church by Dr. Davis Smith and the Rev. W. Thomas Wood. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery with Masonic rites. Garrett Funeral Home is in charge. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Leukemia Society.²
