Obituary1877 Obituary Brookfield Illinois newspaper

On Tuesday morning last, at six o'clock, Aaron Ogden Matteson breathed his last. It was an event that had been daily expected for more than a week, and during those dreadful hours of anticipation, scores of the dying man's friends stood by his bedside and bade him a last farewell. Although conscious of the fact that the hour of his dissolution with all things mortal was so near at hand, he did not for a moment seem to shun it. His friends were taken by the hand and bidden goodbye with a mien as calm as if he were in health.,
Aaron was born at Berwick, Warren county, Illinois and at the time of his death was thirty-three years of age. Early in life, being thrown upon his own resources, he entered upon the occupation of clerk in Galesburg. By dint of his integrity and perseverance he rose to the responsible position of teller in Myers' bank of that city, which position he held with credit for nearly three years. He joined the army in the spring of 1864, and was with Sherman on his march to the sea. After being mustered out of service at the close of the war, he went to Chicago and entered the then well-known banking house of Benjamin Lombard, where he served as clerk for nearly two years. In the year 1867 he came to Brookfield, and has lived here ever since. Nearly nine years ago he married Miss Alice Blossom, an estimable lady and daughter of one of our oldest citizens, Mr. G.N. Blossom, with whom he has for some time been associated in the conduct of the Brookfield Hotel. His wife, and little daughter Frankie, who is not yet three years old, survive him, as do his mother, three brothers and one sister,
The disease which caused Aaron's death was consumption. At quite an early age he evinced signs of weak lungs, but as he attained manhood he seemed to have out-grown it all, and bore every indication of a vigorous, healthy man. Not until a year ago did the disease take hold upon him again, but from that time his health has rapidly declined. He spent a short time in Kansas with a view to the improvement of his health, and subsequently spent nearly three months in northern Minnesota, with scarcely no improvement in health, he, in common with his friends, soon realized that the disease had fastened a deathgrip upon him. His youthful vigor, however, staved off the dreaded event longer even than his physicians had thought possible. His death is indeed a sad bereavement to the family, especially to the loving wife and aged mother. A large circle of friends extend them their heartfelt sympathy, and stand ready, by word or deed to comfort them in their affliction.
Funeral services were held at the house yesterday afternoon, the Rev. I.C. Caton officiating. Last night the remains were taken to Galesburg, Illinois, for interment in the family plot.2
