NoteJohn has the original Houghton Association documents of 1846-1848.
CorrespondNov 4, 202517220 Players Ridge Dr., Cornelius, NC, USA, johnkosicki@gmail.com
NoteNov 4, 2025I have in my possession a bunch of historical letters from the Houghton family. I believe there are at least 300 pages that are the original letters of a Fisher M Rice. He was an individual who was commissioned to go to England to see if there was any land or assets that would be available to Houghton heirs in America. The body that funded his trip was the Houghton Association. I also have some original documents from that organization. It appears that the time period was about 1846-1848. My wife is a Houghton and I believe that her family tree goes back to England? At least the early 1700's as far as I can tell. Most of the ancestors were in New England - Vermont, Massachusetts.

These documents have been sitting in a closet and before they get lost or destroyed, I wanted to preserve them for future generations. Probably scan, convert handwriting to text, digitize etc. Not even sure I know what all that means or involves. The letters are all in great shape. Have been stored flat and are very readable. But it would be nice to have them in text form so as to be faster to read.

Did a quick review of what I have. (There also may be a lot more that Robert Houghton has....my brother in law. I have reached out to him.
Items:
The Houghton Association Report of the Agents to England. NYC 1848 - approx 40 pages. Report is in the original envelope
Constitution and Officers of the Houghton Association with Proceedings of meeting held in Worcester MA March 3, 1847
(plus a lot of other letters etc Mass Houghton Association)
Rice's Letter on the Houghton Genealogy 9-24-48 (with charts)
Numerous letters from Rice to Roland S Houghton, NYC 1846-1847
Numerous letters from Rice to Geo Frederick Houghton St Albans, Vermont 1846+.
There is probably more mixed in all that but I just tried to get a sample of what was in each file. All this material came out of the Houghton house, 86 south main, St Albans, Vermont (my wife's family). She has a good handle on all of the occupants of that home since it was built. Able Houghton (wife Stebbins) were the first occupants I believe.
CorrespondNov 11, 2025John Kosichi: "All of the Houghton Association documents and letters to/from Rice and members of the association are in my possession and are originals. All of the dates are in the 1846-1849 range. My best guess is that Abel Houghton (St Albans relative) lived at 86 South Main and that house was always occupied by my wife's direct ancestors. We sold that property in the 70's. I believe that the chest of old documents that kept floating around was where Abel had stored them. Until about 5 years ago after my mother in law died and we were sifting through the estate, we found this wood chest.. From what was in there, it was obvious that nobody had checked its contents for decades. This Houghton Association document is entitled: Constitution and Officers of the Houghton Association with the Proceedings of the Houghton Meeting held in Worcester, Massachusetts March 3, 1847. The Officers list Fisher Rice as Recording Secretary.
DocumentDec, 2025History of Houghton Association Documents
Original letters, authored by Fisher Rice (dating1846 - 1848), letters by other various authors relating to the business of the Houghton Association, plus the original handwritten proceedings of the Houghton Association Meeting in Worcester, March 3 1847 came into possession of Robert Sedgwick Houghton II (North Wilkesboro, NC) and Dorothy Houghton Kosicki (Cornelius, NC).
Robert and Dorothy are the children of Robert Sedgwick Houghton and Mary Baumgardner Houghton of St. Albans, Vermont.
The above mention documents were originally located in the “Houghton House”, 86 South Main Street, St. Albans, Vermont. (Attachment 1)
The house was built in 1800 by John Curtis and is the second oldest home in St Albans. It was part of the “Underground Railroad”, providing a safe place for many slaves on their way to Canada for freedom.
Occupied in 1818 by Abel Houghton of Guilford, Massachusetts, and his wife Emelia Stebbins Houghton, who in 1828 ordered the architectural detailing similar to that found in her family home in Deerfield, Massachusetts. Also occupied by Francis James Houghton, then Harriet Smith Houghton, and, from 1921 by Elvena H. Houghton (until her death in 1965) and her husband Theodore Sedgwick Houghton (until his death in 1971) when the house passed to their children: Dorothy Houghton Peyton (Princeton, NJ), who was married from this house, and Robert Sedgwick Houghton (St Albans, VT) who was born in this house.
During the early 1800s, other Houghton’s appeared on the land records in St. Albans. Among those are George Frederick Houghton who was the son of Abel Houghton, and Alfred Swift Houghton who was the son of George Frederick Houghton.
George Frederick Houghton did not occupy the “Houghton House” at 86 South Main. He had a residence just to the south on Houghton Street. Theodore Sedgewick Houghton was the son of Alfred Swift Houghton and was the grandson of George Frederick Houghton.
These familial relationships might explain how these how these documents came to rest at 86 South Main.
The Houghton House was sold in the 1970s and is currently owned by Brady and Levesque Funeral Home.
The Houghton Association documents were stored in a wooden chest (Attachment 2) and over the years moved from house to house, state to state, until they again resurfaced in 2018 upon the death of Mary Baumgardner Houghton at her residence in Greensboro, NC. At that time, Robert Sedgwick Houghton II and Dorothy Houghton Kosicki took possession and currently hold these items.

Englesby Lodge in St Albans, VT.

The Lodge was chartered in 1851, It was the second lodge in St Albans, the first was Franklin Lodge # 4, which was chartered in 1797. Englesby met in the lodge rooms of Franklin Lodge and became quite active. However, declining membership caused them to give up their charter in 1898 and they combined with Franklin Lodge. The above chest was purchased at auction in 2024 and is now located in the hall of Franklin Lodge.

Historical records of both Lodges were lost in a fire. However, it is confirmed that Theodore Sedgwick Houghton and Robert Sedgwick Houghton were members of Franklin Lodge #4.

It has yet to be determined whether George Frederick Houghton, his brother Francis James Houghton, or his son Alfred Swift Houghton were members of either Lodge.
NotableDec 17, 2025John Kosichi (1945-): John has been in possession of the original 1846 correspondence of Fisher Rice to many Houghtons in regard to the original Houghton Association of 1846. He has been systematically digitalizing them all. A major historical contribution.
