Mrs. Boggs was the widow of Wendell A. Boggs, who died in 2002.
Mrs. Boggs was born Feb. 24, 1922, in Natick, Mass., the daughter of Frank and Roxannah (Gage) Houghton.
She lived in Lynnfield, Mass. for many years before moving to Gilford 38 years ago.
Mrs. Boggs was a member of the Gilford Community Church and a past president of the Laconia Garden Club.
Survivors include three sons, Wendell A. Boggs II of Peabody, Mass., Jeffrey H. Boggs of Gilford and Gary D. Boggs, of Barre, Mass., and four grandchildren.
There will be no calling hours.
A funeral service will be held at the Gilford Community Church, Potter Hill Road, Gilford on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. The Rev. Michael Graham, pastor of the church, will officiate.
Burial will follow at 2 p.m. in the family lot at Lakeview Cemetery, Commonwealth Road (Route 30), Wayland, Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Gilford Fire Rescue, 39 Cherry Valley Road, Gilford 03249, Community Health & Hospice, Inc., 780 North Main St., Laconia 03246 or Spaulding Youth Center, PO Box 189, Tilton 03276.

Burke's Peerage: Sir Richard was born in Sept. 1570, knighted in Jan. 1589/90, created Sheriff of co. Lancaster in 1599, and was created a baronet on May 22, 1611. He represented Parliament for several years, and entertained King James I at the ancestral seat, Hoghton Tower, for several days on the latter's return from Scotland in 1617.

JWH. 32-33: "Sir Richard, b. 8, 26, 1570;d. 11, 12, 1630. At the death of his father he was under age, being but 19 years old, and in ward to Sir Gilbert Gerard. He succeeded to a very large estate, was knighted by Queen Elizabeth, and was Sheriff of Lancashire in 1599. He was several times called to represent the County of Lancashire in Parliament. He was in special favor with King James I, and was among the seventeen whom the King first elevated to the dignity of Baronets, May 22d,1611. When James I, in 1617, made his tour into Scotland, he on his return stopped three days at houghton Tower, viz; August 17,18, and 19, 1617, and was entertained with great hospitality by Sir Richard as the "Bill of Fare" on that occasion indicates. A full account of the splendid festivities is still preserved. King James is said to have knighted the loin of beef served on that occasion and that portion of the carcasss has ever since been called "Sir Loin" from that event.

He married Catherine, daughter of Sir Gilbert Gerard, of Gerard's Bromley, in Staffordshire, Knight and Master of the Rolls and who died Nov. 17, 1617. By her he had six sons and eight daughters."

" Sir Richard Houghton was born August 26, 1570, and died November 12, 1630. He was under age at the time of his father's death, being but nineteen years old, and was in ward to Sir Gilbert Gerard, of Gerard's Bromley in Staffordshire, Master of the Rolls, an intimate neighbor of the Houghtons. Although Sir Richard succeeded to a very large estate yet he further and largely increased the talent committed to him by his own prudent management. From Thomas Laughton, the Baron of Walton and Newton, he extended the estate of Walton C. Bale in compounding with him for the affray at Lea hall and the death of Sir Thomas, the father of Sir Richard. He no doubt further augmented his estate by his marriage with Cathrine Gerard, the daughter of his former guardian, and at his death handed them to his heir, in time more extensive, leaving far higher honors and titles and a more unsullied name than they had ever before possessed. Sir Richard was knighted by Queen Elizabeth's own hand, a most signal honor at any time but doubly so when received direct from the hand of royalty, especially when it is remembered that knight hood was seldom conferred by that haughty Sovereign, and never except as a token of reward for real merit.

In 1600, three years before herr death, she appointed him Sheriff of Lancashire. While attending a county business, the Sheriff was subject to the Sovereign alone and no one was eligible to the post who could not answer with his property any complaint made by the King.

Sir Richard also stood high in favour at the court of King James I and was several times called to represent the county of Lancashire in Parliament.

Sir Richard was one of the seventeen who were first invested with the hereditary dignity of Baronet May 22, 1611. One of the chief delights of James I consisted in making costly and magnificent tours or progresses through different parts of his kingdom and visiting his wealthy subjects at their own castles. One of the most remarkable of these journeys was that which took place in the summer of 1617, when he made his memorable tour in Scotland after an absence of fourteen years therefrom. In the course of this progress King James stopped three days at Houghton Tower and was entertained with great magnificence by Sir Richard. The date of this visit was August 17, 18, and 19, 1617.

Sir Richard is described as a hale handsome man between fifty-five and sixty, with silver hair and beard and a robust and commanding person having a fresh complexion and a countenance manifesting firmness, benevolence and a well informed mind. Sir Richard had six sons and eight daugthers."

Moved from London to Houghton Castle by stagecoach which burned and all records lost. Believed to be the progenitor of the largest of the American branches of the Houghton family. He may have been the father of Ralph Houghton. Had 7 sons and 5 daughters ,p.136, but 13 listed (independent of Ralph).

J.W. Houghton, p. 30, states that James I stayed at Hoghton Tower in 1617 and delighted at quality of steak served to him, touched it with his sword and announced, " I knight thee, Sir Loin". Thus arose the term sirloin of beef at Hoghton Tower, according to British Travel Association. Sir-loin could also mean "above the loin".

Hoghton Tower: 1st Baronet. Succeeded in 1589 and knighted in 1590. Sheriff of Lancashire 1589. Represented in County of Lancaster in parliament 1601-1611. Created Baronet in 1611. It was created on 22 May 1611 for Richard Hoghton, Member of Parliament for Lancashire. Hoghton was of Hoghton Tower and was appointed High Sheriff of Lancashire for 1599 and was knighted in January 1600. In 1601 he was elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Lancashire and was re-elected MP for Lancashire in 1604.

Hoghton was one of the first baronets, created on 22 May 1611.

Aa a staunch presbyterian, he promoted active dissent, a tradition that would be continued by later members of the family.[4]

Hoghton died in 1630 and the baronetcy was inherited by his son Gilbert.17

BiographyHer parentage is unknown; Rousty Harris: She is not the daughter of the immigrant ancestor John Stow although she is the right age, as his children are well documented. No marriage listing in VRs. The question is whether or not she was really a Stowe.

John Stowe, son of John Stowe of Biddenden, was a clerk and an Inn-keeper in Biddenden, Kent and also was Parish Clerk at Biddenden in 1587 He wrote his will on 29 October 1600 and it was probated on 16 December 1601.
He was christened between 2 January 1539 and 1540 at Biddenden, County Kent, England.1 He was the son of John Stowe. He married Joan Baker on 30 July 1572 at Biddenden, County Kent, England.

LOWELL -- Gertrude M. Houghton, a longtime Lowell resident, died Saturday, Feb. 23, at Saints Memorial Medical Center in Lowell after a brief illness. She was 75.

She was born in Belfast, Maine, on Aug. 4, 1926, daughter of the late Elmer and Mabel (Little) Houghton. She received her education in the Lowell school system, and attended the Calvary Baptist Church.

Ms. Houghton retired from Comet Products in Chelmsford. She also had worked in Lowell for Anton Cleaners, and Mobil Chemical Co.

Her survivors include, two sisters, Ruby Houghton-Enis of Lowell and Barbara O'Neil of East Boston; her nieces and nephews, Ron Giordano of Salem, N.H., Linda Enis, Ann M. Enis, Johnny Enis, Bruce Gordon, all of Lowell, Ruth Gordon of Nashua, Dennis Gordon of Potter Place, N.H., Diane Wilder of Chelmsford, Tiffany Gordon of Dracut, Holly Gene, Madonna, Kenney and Brenda Indarato of East Boston, and Ronald Scott Gordon of Nashville, Tenn.

She was also the sister of the late Ruth H. Houghton and aunt of the late Bruce E. Gordon.2
