BiographyLowrey Barney
Two generations of Barneys practiced medicine in the South Jefferson area. The first, Daniel Barney, was born in Swansea, Massachusetts in 1768, moving first to Rutland in 1800, to Adams in 1803 and finally to Henderson in 1807. He was Henderson’s second physician and served as the Jefferson County Medical Society’s first Vice-President. Daniel died in 1828. His son Lowery was born in Coventry, Rhode Island in 1793. He
began the study of medicine with his father when only sixteen. At the time the two made their way to visit patients by following Indian paths and the use of marked trees. He graduated from Fairfield Medical College in 1823, staying on for an additional year of instruction. He later received an additional diploma from the Medical College of Castleton (Vermont). Lowery was elected a New York State Assemblyman in 1836.
His obituary claims he served as president of the Medical Society of the State of New York. In 1850 he was elected the second president of the short-lived American Hygienic and Hydropathic Association of Physicians and Surgeons. Barney, along with most of the officers, missed the organization next meeting and the association appears to have disbanded shortly thereafter. Stonewall Jackson. In July 1851 Lowery was in New York City visiting his daughter (now Mrs. Houghton) and brother Hiram. Hiram was a well-connected lawyer, a later advisor to Lincoln
and is said to have assisted Lincoln in drafting the Emancipation Proclamation. Also visiting the Hiram Barneys was an old friend, Brevet Major Thomas J. Jackson, later to become better known as “Stonewall”.
"I have derived so much benefit from your wholesome and wise instructions that gratitude to you will accompany me to my grave.
Letter to Dr. Barney from Stonewall Jackson, 18 August 1853

According to legend, Jackson was later to repay Lowery’s kindness. At the first battle of Bull Run, Major Andrew “Jack” Barney (Lowery’s son) was fatally wounded while leading his company in the battle. A detachment carrying his body from the field was captured by the Confederates. Stonewall, recognizing the body, ordered that Jack’s sword and belongings be preserved and that the detachment be
escorted back to Union lines.
