August Schmuland1

M, #36617, b. January 1862, d. 1947
Last Edited29 Apr 2018
He was born in January 1862 at Russia.2 Alternatively, he was born in 1861 at Russia/Poland according to his grave marker and the 1916 & 1921 census3,4,5,6 or circa 1860 at Rawa, Poland, Note that this may be modern Rawa Mazowiecka which is about 40 miles east of Lodz, Poland.7 August married Rosalie Kupsch at Russia.8,1,5 August married Elizabeth Daffe before June 1921, Note that her married name prior to this marriage was probably Schmidt or Smith. This is based upon name variants for her son, Peter, who they were going to visit according to several border crossing manifests.9,6
He died in 1947.4 August Schmuland was buried at Baptist Cemetery (Fenwood), RM of Stanley No. 215, Saskatchewan, Canada.3,4

Census Data

August Schmuland appeared on the 1911 Canadian Census of Saskatchewan, at Township 25, range 10, W. 2. M, enumerated 5 June 1911. August was enumerated in the Gottlib Busch household as a farm labourer and a Baptist. Gottlib Schmuland, possibly his brother, was enumerated in the previous household. Note that he already claimed to be a naturalized citizen. Gottlib immigrated in 1910 and August in 1911. It appears that his family had not yet come to Canada.2 He and Rosala Smuland (sic) appeared on the 1916 Census of Canadian Prairie Provinces of RM of Ituna Bon Accord No. 246, Saskatchewan, enumerated 5 June 1916, enumerated as a farmer and a Baptist. Their children Amil, Bertha, Tilly and Lily were listed as living with them, All were shown as aliens, not Canadian citizens; and their mother tongue was German.5
August Schmuland and Elizabeth Schmuland appeared on the 1921 Canadian Census of RM of Stanley No. 215, Saskatchewan, enumerated 1 June 1921, enumerated as a farmer and a Baptist. Their daughter Lidia was listed as living with them. Note that Elizabeth was Lydia's step-mother.6
August Schmuland was included on a passenger manifest for the S. S. Cairnrona dated 1 April 1911 Portland, Maine, USA. This passenger manifest gives his age as 47 so his birth year would have been about 1864. He was listed as a farm laborer. He was travelling with Johan Schmuland, age 48, a carpenter. Their destination was Hubbard, Saskatchewan and they were joining their son-in-law and brother, respectively.10 He immigrated in 1911 to Canada from Russia according to census records.2,6
August Schmuland was a survivor of his wife Rosalie who died in 1920.11 August Schmuland and Elizabeth Schmuland crossed the border on a temporary visit circa 14 July 1934 at Eastport, Boundary County, Idaho, USA. They were making a 6 week visit to his half son (probably her son), Peter Smith (earlier manifests gave his name as P. J. Schmidt and Peter Schmidt) of Sunnyside, Washington. From this manifest we learn that August was 5'6", with a medium complexion, gray hair and blue eyes. He gave his birthplace as Rawa, Poland.7 August Schmuland and Elizabeth Schmuland crossed the border on a temporary visit on 10 June 1938 at Eastport, Boundary County, Idaho, USA. They were making a 3 1/2 month visit to Peter Smith of Sunnyside, Washington. From this manifest we learn that August was 5'6", with a medium complexion, gray hair and blue eyes and lame in the right leg. It gives his birthplace as Rawa, Piotrkow, Poland.7
August Schmuland was identified as the father of Karl Schmuland in Karl's obituary after his death on 1 July 1989.12
The following information is from my personal research, January 2018:
In "The Germans from Volhynia and Russian Poland" the University of Alberta provides the following quote:
"Virtually all German Baptist communities that had been established in the 1850s in Poland emigrated to Volhynia (by 1914 Volhynia would have between 40,000 and 50,000 Baptists, served by about a dozen churches.)"

This may help to explain the confusing references to Russia, Poland and Ukraine in various sources for the Schmuland family.13
