The following biographical information appeared The Gazette published in Montréal, Québec, 25 November 1950:
People on Parliament Hill
by F. C. Mears
Born at Cobden, Ontario, 70 years ago and given his secondary education at Renfrew, Fisheries Minister Robert Mayhew is a product of the Ottawa Valley. His first venture into the west, where he was eventually to develop a large and lucrative business, was soon after matriculation in the Renfrew Collegiate. His avowed object was to move nearer the sunset so that he might make enough money with which to attend college in the east.

Railway travel across the continent in those days we, to say the least, different. Bob Mayhew climbed into a colonist car, many of his fellow travelers being Chinese. There were no wicker chairs then, he recalls, "just the straight slat seats and they couldn't be called soft or comfortable." His dream of money for education was doomed to be shattered, for he contracted typhoid fever in the west and returned east a year later.

Returned West
He did, though, manage to get himself a year at Queen's University, then a few months in this federal capital employed as a clerk in the Lindsay store at the munificent salary of $12.50 a week. That gave him a push-off and he again succumbed to the urge to have a part in the life of the west, this time stopping at Calgary, where he engaged in the business of real estate and insurance.

At the request of persons in Edmonton Mr. Mayhew made a report on some land north of Edmonton and in an area close to where oil has recently gushed. After reporting on some of this land, he himself sold some, and made his first profitable investment. Not until 1914 did he reach the Pacific Cost and the city of Victoria, where he has spent the remainder of his life.

There was a constructive bent in this highly successful business man. In his first try he manufactured roofing, buying the felt mostly at Porneuf on the St Lawrence River. It was a long way to transport such a raw material, so is (sic) wasn't long before he began to make his own felt, with which he manufactured roofing, but he didn’t stop there. For soon he started the manufacture of wood pulp, this leading him in to the production of paper board, and, he admits, he ended up with "a nice business."

Entered House in 1937
Mr. Mayhew made his first bow to the House of Commons after a successful be-election in November, 1937, and in the three succeeding general elections he also came out on top. He was first appointed Minister of Fisheries in June 1948, and when Mr. St. Laurent took over as prime minister he was appointed to the fisheries portfolio. In the fall of 1948, and after the general election of June, 1949, Mr. Mayhew found himself still with that portfolio.

In the past two years Mr. Mayhew has twice crossed the Pacific, first with Veterans Affairs Minister Lester Pearson to the Commonwealth parley in Ceylon and later to the conference in Australia. It was on the first of the two trips that he had a chance to make a first hand, though brief study of conditions in Southeast Asia and China, and he asserts now that an important and workable plan has been developed to help the people of China and Southeast Asia to raise their standard of living.

"I'm wholeheartedly in favor of the scheme already outlined by Britain's acting chancellor, Mr. Galskell," says Mr. Mayhew.

Repeating arguments used many times by Sir John Boyd Orr, Mr. Mayhew declares, "there cannot be peace in Asia where are a third of the world's people and where a lamentable large proportion of these are always hungry. Some contend that Asia cannot be helped to raise its ways of living, that the task is too big. I don't agree with that, neither can any of those who believe that international co-operation will eventually remove causes of friction and wars."

Lacks Mechanical Aids
Asia, Mr. Mayhew says, has a tremendous store of human power, but it does lack mechanical aids. All of them could not be supplied with tractors and other labor-saving devices, and even if these were possible it might not be desirable, but the Asiatic people should certainly be better provided with food from America in the years of ruined harvests. That in itself would be a tremendous help to morale, as well as to health. Still another way to help those teeming millions would be to supply them with the means for flood control, for floods have done more damage than drought.

Mr. Mayhew's immediate responsibility is the Fisheries Department whose chief functions are the conservation and development of Canada's fishery resources, both sea and inland. Fish inspection and the education of inland Canadians to give fish a bigger place on their menu are jobs of the department.

It is explained by Mr. Mayhew that this year's reorganization of the department has placed protection and development of fisheries under the department of conservation service which also operates a number of hatcheries, restocks waters in areas where there is Dominion authority, and also takes care of stream improvement. As between the Dominion and the provinces there is a division of administrative but not legislative authority over fisheries.

Even at 70, Mr. Mayhew displays a remarkable capacity for work. There is nothing demonstrative about this man from the Pacific Coast. Even though most of the people from beyond the Rockies hold it pays to advertise in Parliament as elsewhere, but his business wisdom goes far in these parts. He can be counted on to take care of the nation's fisheries until after the next election, and in the meantime he has established a solid claim to respect and favor.13

In the obituary of Kenneth Mayhew who died 1 May 1960, his uncle, R W Mayhew of Victoria, was listed as a survivor.14
In the obituary of Grace Gertrude Mayhew who died 2 September 1967, Grace's husband, Robert W Mayhew was listed as a survivor.15
See the footnotes below for a link to his on-line obituary that appeared Ottawa Journal published in Ottawa, Ontario, 4 August 1971 .4

In the obituary of Jean Lawrason who died 5 January 2006, her father, Hon. Robert Mayhew was listed as predeceased.16

Wedding
The home of Mrs Thos. Plaunt, Sr., Northcote, was the scene of a very pleasing event on Wednesday afternoon, 19th inst., when Maggie S. Plaunt was united in marriage to Mr. C. W. Mayhew, also of that place. The day was bright, the sun smiling upon the bridal party as they took their places on the lawn in front of the house at 3:30; while Mrs. J.A. Plaunt played the wedding march. Mr. X. Plaunt gave the bride away, and she was accompanied by Miss Lucy Mayhew, her bridesmaid, while Mr. T. Gibbons did the duties of best man. The bride looked pretty in blue poplin, trimmed with white brocaded silk, and white applique with a drop yoke of white brocaded silk. The bridesmaid was similarly attired. Rev. D. H. Hodges pronounced the solemn words which made the two one. After the congratulations about sixty guests sat down to tables laden with good things and tastily decorated with flowers, etc. There was music at intervals, and after a very sociable time the bridal party and many of the friends drove to the home of the groom, where a reception was held the same evening. The presents which were numerous, pretty and valuable, showed the esteem in which the bride was held. Mr. and Mrs. Mayhew have the best wishes of a host of friends for their future happiness.26

In the obituary of Joseph O Plaunt who died 8 December 1933, his adopted sister, Mrs. Margaret Mayhew of Renfrew, ON, was listed as a survivor.27
