THE END OF LIFE

Avery Bullock, a Well-Known Young Man of this City, Died at 11:15 To-Day [14 October 1893] of Typhoid Fever

At 11:15 a.m. to-day, Avery Bullock, son of Mr. & Mrs. N.C. Bullock, departed this life after four weeks' lingering illness from typhoid fever. His end was easy and peaceful. Deceased was born in Winneshiek county, Iowa, August 11, 1862, and with the exception of a few winters spent in Nebraska and Dakota had lived in Iowa all his life until coming to Madison three years ago. Since coming here he had been engaged principally as a hotel clerk at the Lake Park [hotel] and in that capacity became popularly known, not only in the city to to many people from abroad. He was of a lively, energetic and kindly disposition and a general favorite with all his people, and especially his own family who are very much prostrated with the sad event The death of a young man in the prime of life is, indeed, a sad trial to loved ones wrapped up ion his promise of the future, and so it is in the case of Avery Bullock. Another fact, which makes it particularly sad in this instance, was his engagement to Miss Anna Thompson, an exemplary young lady, who stood by him in his last days with the most faithful womanly devotion, and suffers, even as keenly as the intimate relatives of the deceased, the supreme anguish of the moment.
The family is too unsettled at this writing to fix the exact date of the funeral, but it is not probable that it will take place before Tuesday next. The remains will in all likelihood be interred in Madison cemetery, as the family us now permanently settled here. Deceased was an only son and leaves father, mother and two sisters -- Mrs. W.W. Janes and a younger sister, Rena. Two uncles, S.C. and A. Bullock also live in the city [Madison, SD].5

From the Madison [SD] Daily Leader,Tuesday,17 October 1893, page 3:
The funeral of the late Avery Bullock took place at 2 p. m. and was largely attended. A short service was held at the family residence on Blanche avenue, and the remains then taken to the M. E. church. M.J. McGillivray acted as director and the pall-bearers were John Walsh, Granger McCallister, Mons Grinager, Cal Nichols, Frank Palmer and Roy Wagner. The floral tributes at the church were simple and beautiful, consisting of a pillow with the name ‘Avery” designed in green twinings and placed upon the coffin, while on an easel at the bead of the bier was a spread with a large star and other designs of tea roses. Rev. J. Y. Ewart read the scripture lesson and Rev. J. P. Jenkins led in prayer and preached from Psalm 90;12: “Teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” At the close of the services, a long procession tiled its way slowly and solemnly to the [Graceland] cemetery, the last resting place of Avery Bullock.

Biography

Mary was born on 10 December 1840 in Attica Township, Genesee County, New York. She married Moses Kimball on 15 December 1865. Mary died on 13 August 1913, in Janesville, Rock County, Wisconsin, at age 72. Hiram Bullock's 1909 obituary mentions two surviving sisters, one living in Janesville and the other in Whitewater, WI. She was buried in August 1913 in Oak Hill Cemetery, Janesville, Rock County, Wisconsin.

Mary Jeanette Bullock is a direct descendant of Pilgrim passenger(s) John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley on the Mayflower. She moved with Levi Bullock and Deborah Bullock from Genesee County, New York, to to Lima Township, Rock County, Wisconsin, at the age of 17 with his seven brothers and sisters circa 11 May 1841. Mary Jeanette Bullock appeared on the census of 1850 in the household of Levi Bullock in Lima, Rock County, Wisconsin, which shows Levi Bullock, a farmer age 50 (born in Massachusetts), and his children, Rosetta, 20, Samuel, 19, Charles, 14, and Mary, 9, all born in Wisconsin. The same 1850 census shows Levi's son Hiram, 13, as living with Levi's oldest son Ebenezer and his family. Apparently Levi's second wife Sally had died just before the 1850 census was taken.1
The 16 August 1913 edition of the Janesville (Rock County, Wisconsin) Gazette carried the following obituary:

Mrs. Mary Jeanette Kimball, whose funeral services were conducted at Oak Hill [Cemetery] Chapel [in Janesville, Rock County, Wisconsin] at 3:30 o'clock this afternoon by the Rev. Father Henry Willmann, was born in Attica [Genesee County], New York, December 10, 1840, and married to Moses H. Kimball about forty-five years ago [actually in 1865]. He has been dead twenty-nine years [since about 1884].
Mrs. Kimball came to Johnstown [Rock County, Wisconsin] with her parents when a young girl [in 1841] and to Janesville about fifteen years ago [in about 1898]. She is survived by one daughter, Miss Bertha Kimball, a brother, Samuel Bullock, and a step-daughter, Mrs. Ella Huribut of Fairbury, Nebraska, who was at her mother's bedside when she passed away. Mrs. Kimball had been sick for four years. Last Saturday spinal meningitis set in and was the immediate cause of her death [on 13 August 1913]. She was a member of the Baptist church, its aid society, the W.C.T.U. and Rebekah Lodge No. 26.

Ebenezer Bullock, Sr., married Beulah Bosworth, daughter of Jonathan Bosworth, Sr., and Susannah Chilson, on 14 March 1782 in Royalston, Worcester County, Massachusetts.4,5,6,7,8

Ebenezer Bullock, Sr., died after 1840.
Ebenezer Bullock, Sr., moved with Christopher Bullock, Sr., and Sarah Moulton from Cumberland, Providence County, Rhode Island, British Colonial America, to to Scituate, Providence County, Rhode Island circa 1756.

Ebenezer Bullock, Sr., lived in 1777 in Scituate, Providence County, Rhode Island.9

He was a private in the Rhode Island militia in the Revolutionary War. Ebenezer was a pensioned soldier of the Revolutionary War. His Pension Number: S.29,047. On 16 October 1832 (when he would have been about 76 years old), he appeared before the court at Genesee County, New York. He deposed that he was a resident of Attica. He said he was born in Cumberland, Rhode Island, in 1757 [sic; actually 1756] and that he had lived in Royalston, Massachusetts, Brutus, Cayuga County, New York, and in Attica, Genesee County, New York, since the Revolutionary War. He said that he was very infirm and has become very forgetful, but he knew that he had served in the Revolution.

He said he was drafted at Situcate, Rhode Island, in December 1775 to guard the shore with the militia. He was discharged after one month. He was again drafted as a militiaman in 1776 and served at Warwick Neck, Rhode Island, for one month, and then again was discharged. He then entered the service in the Rhode Island Militia as a substitute for Christopher Bullock (probably his younger brother) and served one month, but did not remember the regiment.

About 1778, in the midst of haying time, he was drafted for an indefinite time to assist General Sullivan in his expedition against the British in Rhode Island. He was in the Battle of the Island from beginning to the end which was about the last of August 1778. He said he slept on the battleground that night and the next day the American army retreated to the mainland. He was discharged the 4th or 5th of September 1778.

Near the close of the war, he thought about 1780, he enlisted in Capt. Turtelot's Company. A Samuel Mury had enlisted for 15 months and deserted and, although the statements are hard to read, it appears that Ebenezer was expected to take his place. (Revolutionary War Pension Applications, Ebenezer Bullock Rhode Island, S29047).

Biography

Harold was born on 27 November 1894. [Janes-Peek, page 252]. He married Dixie Lyle. [Janes-Peek, page 252]. Harold died on, in Colorado.
In 1934, Harold Janes lived in Whitewater, Walworth County, Wisconsin.

A 1947 edition of the Janesville [Rock County, Wisconsin] Gazette carried the following article:

JANES MOVE TO JANESVILLE, RECALLING TREK OF ANCESTOR WHO FOUNDED CITY

Whitewater.-- The Janes are on the move again, but in a different style than 111 years ago when they founded Janesville.
Whitewater lost two of its local citizens today as Harold Janes and his wife, Dixie, moved from their home on West Walworth Street to a new home on Route 4, Highway 11 West, Janesville. the present Janes travelled a far different trail to his new home than that traveled by his ancestor, Henry F. Janes, founder of the City of Janesville.
His ancestor traveled through forests and over Indian trails, on foot and in wagons drawn by oxen, to move his family from Racine County [Wisconsin] to a crudely built log cabin located on the spot which was to become Janesville.
Janes finds that todays problems in finding a home and moving into it are vastly different than those faced by his rugged pioneer ancestors, who settled in this area in 1836.
Henry F. Janes traveled across country from Racine County three times before finally reaching the place which today bears his name. He followed the old Indian trails through the woods in rain, sleet and snow before his struck claim in February 1836 and hired a man to build his cabin.
In the spring of that year [1836], he loaded his possessions and his family in wagons, pulled by oxen, and set out on the long trek to Janesville. On the way they encountered hardships from weather, bogged down in marshy places, and suffered from thirst. They arrived in Janesvilles to find their first home with earthen floors, minus a door, and with chinks between the logs so wide that they let the rain pour through.
Today, Janes and his wife moved their furniture by motor truck and their choicest possessions traveled with them in a fast Buick sedan. The house to which they moved is quite waterproof, with good hardwood floors, and all the modern convenience which are taken so far granted today.
One of the biggest jobs in moving was handled a few weeks ago -- strictly by Janes and his wife. This was the job of moving thousands of bulbs, all of which received special care.
They are to be planted in three acres of land, an important annex to the new home. Janes' hobby, grown to business size, is raising gladiola which he sells in bulb, floral arrangement and bouquet form.
Janes trained to be both a school teacher and a decorator. He followed the latter trade for many years and still puts in a good day's work with rushes and ladder.
His first love, however, is raising gladioli. Started as a hobby about 25 years ago, the glads have grown into a real business for both Janes and his wife. Following World War II, Janes found himself so busy with the hobby, that he's had little time for other things.
He has developed one special flower himself. It is named "Confession" and is a pure white flower with heavy ruffled petals. Janes has been president of the Wisconsin Gladiolous Society and gives talks about the flowers to various groups, as well as specializing in floral arrangements and conducting a good business of selling bulbs.
When Henry F. Janes began to cultivate his land in the spring and summer of 1836, his tools were all hand tools and his oxen helped where the strength of his own arms and back needed supplementing. Today, when Harold Janes breaks his new ground, he'll find help from tractors and power driven tools, though the actual planting of bulbs with be an "on hands and knees" process.
Janes is proud of his ancestor's claim to fame and traces his family tree back to 1610 in England and in America from 1637 when the first Janes, William, sailed to Governor Bradford's Massachusetts Colony. Janes grandfather followed his cousin Henry F. Janes to this area and settled in North Johnstown in 1838. Five generations of the Janes family are buried in the North Johnstown Cemetery.
Janes recalls stories his grandfather told him of earlier days in the area, when wild pigeons, now extinct, covered the grain stacks in the fall so thick that one could see nothing but black on the stacks. He remembers his own father telling of the time when he and a brother cut and bundled 100 acres of grain by hand in 12 days. His father, who was also a decorator, walked to and from Milton and Lima to do a full day of decorating work for which he was paid $1, or 10 cents an hour, for 10 hours of work.
A proud possession which will be found on the wall of the new home is a colorful family crest. In a prominent place among his books you will also be sure to find copies of the Janes Family Genealogy and the History of Rock County. Both books tell of the colorful lives of Janes' ancestors as a pioneer family in the history of Janesville.

Harold and Dixie Janes later moved to Colorado. Dixie Lyle Janes died first, and they are both buried in a military cemetery somewhere near Denver. They had no children.
