Lawrence “Larry” M. Smith, age 84, a resident of Portland, died Sunday at Ball Memorial Hospital.
Larry was a former Insurance Agent selling Prudential Insurance for 22 ½ years from 1965-1987.. He also worked from 1995 until 2003 in maintenance at Bearcreek Farms. He then worked from 2004 until 2007 for Jay Randolph Developmental Services. He was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church and the Portland Kiwanis Club. He also served as a coach for the Jay County Special Olympics. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during WW II serving from 1943-1946. He was a member of the Portland American Legion Post #211.

Larry Smith was born on October 1, 1924, in Marysville, Indiana, the son of W. Forrest and Esther (Amick) Smith. He graduated from Jeffersonville High School in Jeffersonville, Indiana in 1943. He married Sarah D. Eggenspiller on February 12, 1953.

Pastor Hugh Kelly will officiate and burial will follow in the Green Park Cemetery in Portland. The Portland American Legion Post #211 will conduct military graveside rites. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4 until 8 p.m. and one hour prior to service time on Friday in the Portland Chapel of the Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home.
Memorials may be directed towards the Jay County Cancer Society, the Jay County Christian Academy or the Jay County Special Olympics.
