Trinity College, May 17.—After a se- rious illness of a week’s duration. Prof. Arthur Herbert Merritt, head of the department of Greek at Trinity college, died at his home on Trinity campus this morning at 11.30 o’cloek. Professor Meritt’s death was due to a complica- tion of diseaser which proved too strong for his constitution, weakened as it was by the serious illness which he uffered a few years ago when he was operated on in Johms Hopkins hospital in Balti- more, Md. At his bedside when death came were his wife, his two sons, Ben- jamin, aged 13, and Herbert aged eight, together with his sister in-law, Mrs. Nellie Judson, and her daughter. Miss Helen.Professor Merritt had been teaching in Trinity college since 1393, two years after the college was removed to Dar- ham from Randolph county. During these 19 years, he has been one of the most prominent factors in the growth of the college, and much of the success which has come to the instituticn has been due to his wise advice and counsel. His life has been a part of the history of Trinity college, and no man connect- ed with the institution has ever left it who has been missed as will this much loved man. He was married August 22, 1891, to Miss Cornelia Frances Dean, who was with him at his death. The funeral exercises will be held to- morrow afternoon, and will probably be conducted from Memorial Methodist church, of which Professor Merritt was an active member. Bishop Kilgo will probably conduct the funeral if he can get back here from Greenville, S. C., where he is spending a few days with friends by Rev, G. F. Smith, pastor of Memorial church, and Dr. Franklin N. Parker, head of the department of Biblican literaure in Trinity college.

"Lafayette Meritt, one of West Eaton's old and highly respected citizens, died at his home near this village Tuesday noon following an illness of many months. Beside his widow, he is survived by three sons, Ernest of Glvoersville, Erwin B. of Dorchester, Mass. and Arthur, who resides in one of the southern states; and two daughters, Miss Mertie, who lives at home, and Mrs. Percy Wadsworth of Cortland."
