was creative and charismatic and had many friends. She was born in Niagara Falls, NY and grew up in the Bronx, Syracuse and Kenmore, NY. She attended Alfred University, where she met her future husband George Houghton. After graduating Magna Cum Laude from Alfred, she obtained a teaching certificate from Cornell then taught at South Hill School in the sixties. In the seventies she worked as a craftswoman and was also an early member of the Ithaca Farmers' Market. She and her husband George were active birders and longtime members of the Cornell Folk Song Club. She had an excellent voice and knew hundreds of traditional and contemporary folk songs, accompanying herself on 6- and 12-string guitar. Jo was the eldest daughter of Bill and Eileen Muhlbauer. She was predeceased by her sister, Patricia Nye. She is survived by her husband George Houghton; son Jim Houghton and his wife Jodi Sterling; nephew Will Nye, niece Leigh Taylor and their children; and cats Fizzy, Squeeky, Pippen, and Blackie. A memorial service is planned for Sunday, April 17 at 1pm at the Brooktondale Community Center, 522 Valley Road, Brooktondale, NY. Donations in Jo's name can be made to the Tompkins County SPCA. Bangs Funeral Home will be assisting the family.

Hazel Houghton, 74, a native of Napoleonville and a resident of Thibodaux, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 16, 2016.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until Religious Services at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 23 at Moses Baptist Church in Thibodaux, LA. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
