Origin

Leitrim, Ireland, I have no problems staying in the project. The oldest traceable ancestor was Robert Haughton, B 1813. I believe he was born in Leitrim Ireland (not sure if it is the county or township) as his brother’s headstone (William Haughton)reflects that was where William was born. He resided in Rawdon Township, Hastings county, Ontario, Canada.

He was married to Mary Cowan who appeared to be from Leitrim as well. Her family was well known in Ontario. The name has been reflected as Houghton in older ancensus (1860s), but the family formalized the spelling to Haughton later. I suspect they migrated toCanadain the 1830s before the famine.

In the censuses they sometimes indicated they were Irish, and other times they indicated English. They were farmers and members of the Church of England so I suspect they migrated to Leitrim during or after the plantation period.

According to SNP testing I'm related to a number of families who originated in the Scotish Borders region. My family aparently took the Haughton name and moved to Leitrim Ireland, then to Ontario, Canada. I'm matched with a number of Wharton's from Westmoreland, and suspect Haughton is a Wharton variant.
