Less than three years ago, Daniel Houghton was a photojournalism student at Western Kentucky University. Now he's the top-man at the company that will soon own iconic travel guide company Lonely Planet.

Not bad for a Fayetteville, Ga. (population 15,945) native who grew up flying around the world for free, as both of his parents worked for airlines.

Houghton is the executive director of Franklin-based NC2 Media, which Tuesday announced plans to buy the Lonely Planet travel media company from BBC Worldwide for about $77 million. NC2 Media is owned by Brad Kelley, the notoriously private billionaire who founded and later sold the Commonwealth Brands tobacco company.

These days the twenty-something Houghton (he wouldn't reveal his age) is a very busy guy. On Tuesday he was in Australia. On Wednesday it was Singapore. As Lonely Planet's new chief operating officer, Houghton will have his work cut out for him: The guidebook industry has experienced rapid decline in recent years.

Houghton talked to the Nashville Business Journal via email about the future of Lonely Planet, how he got connected with Kelley and his deep-rooted love of travel.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself: How old are you? Where are you from? What is your business background?

I'm from Fayetteville, Ga., and I lived there until moving to Kentucky to attend WKU to pursue photojournalism and new media. Both of my parents worked for the airlines and I had the privilege of flying around the world for free until I graduated college. I took advantage of it. Travel was therefore ingrained in me at a young age and much of my career has been focused on facilitating my ability to travel. I have a wife of 2 ½ years and we live in Franklin.
