ObituaryMar 19, 2013William "Bill" J. Flaherty, 92, of Manasquan, N.J., passed away Saturday, March 16, 2013, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. William was born in Jersey City, N.J., raised in North Arlington, and resided in Kearny, N.J., for most of his life before moving to Manasquan, 17 years ago. He served in the 8th Armored Infantry Battalion in the Central Europe Campaign during World War II, and was awarded the Bronze Star. William was a surety and bond executive with Cigna, and was also an adjunct professor at the College of Insurance, New York. He was president of Forest Hill Field Club, Bloomfield, N.J., where he was an avid golfer for many years. William was a member of Queen of Peace Church, North Arlington, its Knights of Columbus, and active in the Holy Name Society. He was predeceased by his parents, William J. and M. Claire Houghton Flaherty; his beloved wife, Beatrice Ford Flaherty; his dear daughter, Kathleen F. Shugg, and his three brothers, James, Robert, and John Flaherty. Surviving are his devoted children, Beatrice F. DiNapoli and husband, Dominick, of Union, N.J., William J. Flaherty and wife, Cynthia, of Columbus, Ohio, and Jean M. Flaherty of Manasquan; his son-in-law, Stephen Shugg of Rochester Hills, Mich; his sister, Claire Flaherty Goldstein of Brick, N.J; his sister-in-law, Patricia Flaherty of Manchester, N.J; his cousin, Rev. Msgr. Francis J. Houghton of Tinton Falls, N.J; his seven grandchildren, Elizabeth M. DiNapoli, Peter A. Flaherty, David K. Flaherty, Mark W. DiNapoli, Erin K. Shugg, Stephen J. Shugg, and William J. Flaherty V, and his two great-grandchildren, Dylan E. Shugg, and Maya G. Flaherty. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Thursday, March 21, 2013, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Highway 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall, N.J., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, March 22, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Queen of Peace Church, 10 Franklin Pl., North Arlington, N.J. 07031.
