Marvin "Marv" Dean Houghton

Marvin "Marv" Dean Houghton, 78, passed away peacefully from complications related to his heart on Thursday, February 4, 2016, surrounded by his loved ones. Marvin was born to Irvin W. Houghton and Helen B. (Tucker) Houghton, on August 12, 1937, in San Luis Obispo and moved to Ventura when Marvin was 18 months old. He was the 2nd of three children, his brother, Warren, and his sister, Marilyn.

Marvin contracted Polio at the age of seven and was quarantined for ten months with no physical contact. He often recalled that time in his life as one of the hardest.

At the age of nine, Marvin began tap dancing to strengthen his legs which doctors had recommended. He attended Billy Clower Dance Studio and became an avid dancer enjoying all types of dance including Ballroom, Tap, etc.

At 12 years of age, he juggled three jobs while still attending school. Marvin was a dishwasher at Leo's Spanish Kitchen, a pin setter at Poinsettia Bowl, and sold drinks at the sporting games. At 14 years old, Marvin would tag along with Warren's older friends who loved cars, and where his lifelong love of cars started?.Beer and cigarettes too? At 16 in High School he met Kathleen I. Baker, the love of his life. Marvin worked for Uncle Gard at the family ran service station his last year of High School and then joined the United States Navy, where he toured Japan. Marvin returned home on a leave and married Kathleen, they were 18 and 19 years old, (and no she was not pregnant). He returned home two years later to start a family, Mitch was born in 1957 and Debbie in 1959.

While back at the service station, Marvin saw an ad in the Star Free Press to be a reserve Police Officer and applied. He was in Ventura's first Police Academy and at 23 became a Patrol officer holding Ventura's #1 first Badge. Marvin was very proud of the fact that he held the #1 badge, as he should be. In 1968, he was named Offer of the Year with accomplishments including over 100 felony arrests. Marvin would work nights and weekends as security at local businesses. He went back to college to obtain a BS degree. At 53, Marvin retired from The Ventura Police Department holding the rank of Capt.

Marvin opened a body shop one week after retirement with friend and fellow officer Jay Wilson. He was again back to his love of cars and remained there for 8 years.

The last chapter of his life was full retirement in which he and Kathleen did what they loved the most travel and gambling. Marvin got to do both of those 10 days before his passing.

Marvin was preceded in death by his mother, Helen, step-father, George, and brother, Warren and sister in-law, Marjorie. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; son, Mitch (Barbara); daughter, Debbie (Larry); sister, Marilyn and her husband Dave; grandchildren, Breanne (Sal), Richard, Zachary (Cheryl), Nicholas; great grandchildren Jacob, Bella and Brady.

Life will go on but it will never be the same.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, February 12, 2016, 10:00 am, at the Ted Mayer Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura.

Graveside funeral Services will be held in the West Side District Cemetery on Wednesday, January 16, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. for long time Taft resident, Mary Ann Houghton, 59.

Mary was born in San Diego, California on January 10, 1942, and passed away at the local Taft hospital on January 9, 2002.

She moved to Taft in 1946. Mary worked for J & J Liquor and A.P.I. Plumbing for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Curtis and Mary Houghton. Her survivors include her brother and his wife, her sister and her husband, her sister, her son and his wife, her grandchildren, and her many nieces and nephews.

There are no visitation hours scheduled and the arrangements are in care of the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home.⁴
