I have taught at Hillsdale College since 2005. Prior to that I was an Assistant Professor of Animal Biology at Lynchburg College in Virginia. My teaching and research interests primarily involve the ecology and behavior of aquatic organisms, especially aquatic insects. Aquatic insects are excellent indicators of water pollution, so by assessing their distributions we can learn a great deal about human effects on aquatic ecosystems. Ultimately, such data will allow for a more precise approach to species and habitat conservation, as well as better water quality protection. Other topics of interest include insect chemical communication, case-construction behavior in the caddisflies, and invasive species biology.

Officially I was born and raised in Minneapolis, although the growth that actually mattered occurred while running around in the north woods of Minnesota and fishing the lake at our family cabin.

I received a BS degree in Limnology and Fisheries Managment from the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point where I studied the effects of an exotic crayfish on a stream community of aquatic insects. It was during my senior thesis research that I decided I wanted to be a college professor when (and if) I grew up. It was also during this time that my long-standing interest in all things creepy-crawly got reignited.

After graduation I decided that it was time for a real adventure so I left for a foreign country, Texas, to get my MS degree. I attended the University of North Texas where I studied the biology of a species of caddisfly and got my first real teaching experience.

Leaving Texas, I returned home to the University of Minnesota to earn my PhD in Entomology. I studied the biodiversity of Minnesota caddisflies and how both natural and human-caused environmental variables affected such biodiversity. Basically, it meant that I got to go camping all summer in some beautiful natural places. During this time I worked as a consultant for a variety of government agencies, primarily the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, assessing the conservation needs of aquatic organisms.

After graduation I took a position teaching animal biology at Lynchburg College in Virginia. I resigned that position in 2005 to take my current job at Hillsdale.

Photograph of Mr. Andrew Houghton Mr. Houghton's broad leadership and experience in the disability arena includes presidential and gubernatorial appointments and business consulting for Fortune 500 companies as well as nonprofit organizations. His accomplishments include the development of domestic and international programs that promote full inclusion for people with disabilities through sports and recreation.

Mr. Houghton was appointed by President George W. Bush to the Committee for Purchase From People Who Are Blind or Severely Disabled (Committee) in February 2003, as a private citizen representing the interests of nonprofit agency employees with severe disabilities. In May 2006, Mr. Houghton was reappointed to serve a second term, and in July 2006, he was unanimously elected by his peers as Committee Chairperson. He is the first private citizen and the first person with a disability to chair the Committee.

A current resident of Florida, Mr. Houghton was appointed by Governor Jeb Bush in 2004 to serve on Florida's Blue Ribbon Task Force (BRTF) on Inclusive Community Living, Lifelong Transition, and Employment of Persons with Developmental Disabilities. In 2005, he was subsequently appointed to serve on the Florida Rehabilitation Council, where he is currently First Vice Chairman. Mr. Houghton's state-level work also includes his service as State Commissioner for the Washington Commission on Community and National Service from 2000-2002.

Mr. Houghton is well known for employing solid business practices in the development and implementation of programs that promote economic self-sufficiency, employment and full participation for people with disabilities. He is president and founder of Disability Inclusion Solutions, Inc., a small business specializing in the production of print and visual media for nonprofit, public and private sector companies related to the recruitment, hiring and promotion of employees with disabilities. Mr. Houghton has conducted marketing, training and outreach programs for clients such as Microsoft, Boeing, Starbucks, Alaskan Airlines and Nordstrom, which improved customer service while increasing the recruitment, hiring and retention of people with disabilities. He has produced, directed and written numerous media projects, including "Roll Models 24/7," a documentary about people living with spinal cord injuries; he has also hosted various television segments.

Internationally, Mr. Houghton has advised transitional governments on disability policy and assisted them in developing and implementing sport and recreational programs that benefit their citizens with disabilities. In 1996, Mr. Houghton assisted the International Rescue Committee in developing advocacy training, sports, return-to-work, driver training, and support group programs for people with disabilities in Bosnia. He returned to Bosnia in 1997 with the International Medical Corps to conduct the Bosnia Wheelchair Basketball and Land Mine Awareness Tour, where he led a team of seven gold medalist paralympians on an 11-day, seven-city tour through Bosnia and Croatia.

In November 1999, following the NATO liberation campaign in the Balkans, Mr. Houghton participated in an assessment mission to Kosovo, which resulted in recommendations for advocacy training, adaptive sports programs, disability policy and community programs for people with disabilities. He returned to Kosovo in 2001 to implement one of his recommendations for the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation, which was the development of a replicable model sports and recreation infrastructure for recreational and competitive disability sports programs.

Mr. Houghton has developed and provided guidance to a number of sports and recreational programs for people with disabilities in the United States. In 1995, he founded the Land Meets Sea Sports Camp in Long Beach, CA, one of the largest camps in the United States for persons with disabilities, comprising approximately 12 different sports, over 100 participants, 75 volunteers and conducted over four days every year. He is a member of the volunteer Board of Directors for Shake-A-Leg Miami, an adaptive educational and recreational watersports-based nonprofit agency. Mr. Houghton is also a member of the volunteer Board of Directors for Broward Center for Independent Living, and serves on Volunteer Florida's Inclusion Council.1

2006 America East Coach of the Year

Nicki Houghton begins her ninth season at the helm of the Vermont field hockey program in 2006. She is also only the third coach in the 26-year history of the program.

Houghton brings a wealth of field hockey experience to the position. The Catamounts have made marked improvements in Houghton's short time on the sidelines. Her tireless recruiting efforts and community outreach programs have brought talented student-athletes to Vermont.

In 2002, Houghton led Vermont to a record of 7-13 and a spot in the America East Tournament for the first time in a decade. The Catamounts returned to the America East Semifinals this past season, falling to top-seeded Boston University. Last season five Catamounts were named to America East All-Conference teams, led by Merrie-Beth Maynard and Danielle Collins who were each selected to the first team.

During the summer of 2005, Houghton took a select team of collegiate players on a 12-day tour of Italy. Vermont juniors Besty Welsh and Lisa Patrick were among the select group of student-athletes to make the trip, which saw the team compete in five games during the journey.

A native of Federalsburg, Md., Houghton was a four-year letterwinner in field hockey at Salisbury State, where she led the team to the NCAA Division III Final Four and was named an All-American in 1992. Captain of the team as a senior, Houghton was also a two-time regional All-American. In addition, she was a three-year letterwinner on the Salisbury State women's lacrosse team.

After graduating from Salisbury State in 1993, Houghton went to Lehigh University, where she served as a graduate assistant coach with the field hockey and women's lacrosse programs.

During her stint at Lehigh, both teams won Patriot League titles and Houghton earned a master's degree in education. She left Lehigh to become the assistant field hockey coach at Yale University. During her two years at Yale, the field hockey team advanced to the ECAC Tournament. In 1997, she became an assistant field hockey coach at Southern Connecticut State University.1

Carol A. Houghton

Carol A. Houghton, age 79, formerly of Mequon, died early Wednesday morning, Jan. 3, 2007, at Harbor Village in Port Washington.

The former Carol A. Krainik was born April 1, 1927, in Manitowoc, daughter of the late William L. and Caroline F. Vollendorf Krainik. Carol graduated from Lincoln High School, Manitowoc, in 1945, and attended the Universities of Wisconsin at Madison and Milwaukee, graduating in 1950 with a bachelor's in education. On June 30, 1951, she was married to Robert P. Houghton in Manitowoc. He preceded her in death in 2005. Carol actively taught primary education within the Racine, Detroit and Milwaukee County school districts. She served as a board member of Cardinal Stritch College and Froedtert Memorial Hospital in Milwaukee. She was a curling enthusiast and adored her eight grandchildren.

Survivors include her three children: Barbara Knox of Cincinnati, Ohio; Candace (Warren) Lillund of Whitefish Bay; Robert (Kyle) Houghton of Cottage Grove; eight grandchildren; two sisters: Marjorie Motz of Lititz, Pa; Elaine Vance of Bryan, Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, at the North Shore Congregational Church, 7330 N. Santa Monica Blvd., Fox Point, with the Rev. Karl D. Schimpf officiating. Burial will be at the Evergeen Cemetery, Manitowoc, with the Rev. Dr. Matthew Sauer officiating.

There will be a time of gathering and fellowship following the funeral on Monday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 502 N. Eighth St., Manitowoc, WI 54220, or the North Shore Congregational Church, 7330 N. Santa Monica Blvd., Fox Point, WI 53217.

In 1862 he was appointed on the sanitary commission of that city ; in 1864, under the auspices of the Citizens' Association, be, with others, made an inspection of the sanitary condition of New York city, which served to inaugurate the present system of health government of that dry. and resulted in the establishment of the Metropolitan Board of Health, with which he was connected until his death. He was assistant sanitary superintendent for twenty years, and for ten years had the supervision of the hospital for contagious diseases. He occupied the chair of hygiene in the Woman’s Medical College of the New York Dispensary for seventeen years, and for three years he was recording secretary of the New York Academy of Medicine.
Dr. Janes was one of the originators of the American Public Health Association, and was its recording secretary from 1877 to 1880. He was the author of numerous papers on medical and sanitary subjects, and was a member of the Medical Society of the County of New York, Physicians’ Mutual Aid Association, life member of the New York Historical Society, honorary member of the New Jersey Historical Society, member of the board of directors of the Oratorio Society of New York, and of the board of managers of the New York Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor. Dr. Janes served as a volunteer surgeon in the Federal army, during the War of the Rebellion.
Married, October 14, 1860, Jane Mills Yates. Their children are Martha Ridgway, widow of John McKee Elsmore; Edward Foster Janes; and Elisha Harris Janes.
BiographyJANES, Edward Houghton, physician, born in Northfield, Franklin County, Massachusetts, 3 October, 1820. He was educated in the Delaware literary institute, Franklin county, New York, and was graduated at the Berkshire medical college in 1847. He settled in practice in New York city in 1850, was for a short period during the civil war in the service of the sanitary commission, and appointed sanitary inspector by the Metropolitan board of health in 1866. Since 1873 he has been assistant superintendent of the New York health department. In 1872 he was appointed to the chair of hygiene in the Women's medical college of the New York infirmary. He was one of the original members of the American public health association, and was its recording secretary from 1877 till 1880. He has published a "Report on Condensed Milk" (1858), "Report on the Sanitary Condition of New York" (New York, 1865), annual reports to the American Public Health Association, and papers on professional subjects.

Biography
John Houghton is an Associate Professor in the Forestry Discipline at the College of Natural Resources (CNR), University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point (UWSP).
He instructs courses in the Introduction to Fisheries, Forestry, and Wildlife Resources; Resource Economics; Field Practices in Silviculture; Land Surveying; and People, Resources, and the Biosphere (a non-major environmental literacy course). Dr. Houghton’s diverse background in Resource Economics, Financial Management, and Forestry enables him to effectively teach a variety of upper-level resource management subjects as well. These courses have included Resource Policy and Law; Resource Administration; Forest Management and Finance; and Advanced Forest Management and Economics.
Professor Houghton’s teaching contains the right mixture of knowledge and humor that inspires learning. He truly enjoys his interaction with students as an Instructor, an Academic Advisor to 40 forestry students, and a Faculty Advisor to the Student Chapter of the Society of American Foresters (SAF).
