Alice P. Houghton

Alice May Patton Houghton, 98, formerly of Arlington, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

She was born April 29, 1909, in Garrisonville, a daughter of Archie M. and Robbie J. Patton. She was married in 1930 to Marvin D. Houghton and lived and raised her family in Arlington for 74 years.

Alice loved children, flowers and her garden, and as an expression of sympathy please celebrate her life by planting a tree, shrub or flowers and remembering it while it grows.

Her husband; a daughter, Vera H. Roberson; a son, Nolan M. Houghton; and a grandson, Michael D. Houghton; as well as three brothers; and two sisters predeceased her.

She is survived by a daughter, Thelma L. Williams and her husband, Wayne G. Williams, of Myrtle Beach; a son, Stanley L. Houghton and his wife, Monika, of Palm Beach, Fla; and 11 grandchildren, Karen Edson, Cheryl Morabito, David Robertson, Mack Cardwell, Donald Robertson, Elaine Johns, Jeffrey Cardwell, Reba Robertson, Joe Houghton, Bryan Houghton and Laurie Casey. She had 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters; a brother, Willard E. Patton and his wife, Belva; and a sister, Louise P. Heflin. She was a special "Oma" to Peter Clark.

Visitation will be Sunday, March 16, at Arlington Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 17, at Arlington Funeral Home, 3901 North Fairfax Drive, Arlington, with burial to follow the service in National Memorial Park in Falls Church.²

On Sunday, June 26, 2005 at his home in Stafford, VA. He was a member and deacon at Mount Ararat Baptist Church and a 32nd Degree Mason. Preceded in death by his father, Marvin D. Houghton, and a sister, Vera H. Robertson, he is survived by his mother, Alice Patton Houghton; a sister, Thelma L. Williams of Myrtle Beach, SC; a brother, Stanley L. Houghton of Palm Bay, FL and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 30 at Mount Ararat Baptist Church with the Rev. Aubrey D. Whitten officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 29 at MULLINS & THOMPSON FUNERAL SERVICE, Stafford Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Ararat Baptist Church, 65 Toluca Rd., Stafford, VA 22556.²
