Martha Shelton Houghton (1893-1983) paid the highest tribute to the Junior League of Amarillo by donating her home in 1965 to be used as a headquarters. Although Mrs. Houghton was never a member of the Junior League, she was the first honorary member. Shelton-Houghton House remains today as a living testimony to the pioneer spirit of the early settlers of the Texas Panhandle.
Mrs. Houghton was the only daughter of rancher John Malcolm Shelton and Flora Exum Shelton. John Shelton moved to Texas in 1889, settling in Wheeler County. He eventually controlled ranching land extending west to the New Mexico border and north to the northern border of Texas.
In 1912, Shelton purchased a lot in the Plemons addition of Amarillo at 1700 Polk, one of the most fashionable neighborhoods. He commissioned a young architect, Joseph Camp Berry, to design his home. The house that Berry designed for the Shelton family was constructed in an eclectic prairie style - "prairie" as in such details as the massive roof, which contributes to the general low, horizontal appearance, and "eclectic" in that it borrows from other architectural styles, such as the classical porch that wraps around the house and the "porte-cochere" on the north side. The design included a living room with a grand staircase, a formal dining room, a music room, an upstairs parlor, several bedrooms, and a half basement. Built by W. M. Rice, the house was completed and occupied by the Shelton family in 1914.
It was during this time that Martha, scarcely twenty years old, returned from school in Virginia, and assumed the task of choosing furnishings for the new home. Her selections included English mahogany paneling, maple floors, fixtures from such exotic places as Kansas City and Chicago, hand- painted wallpaper, and numerous Oriental rugs.
In 1923, upon the death of her father, ownership of the house passed to Martha and her husband, Ted Houghton, well known Panhandle cattleman. Changes made through the years by Mrs. Houghton included adding two rooms and a bath, covering the maple floors with oak, painting the paneling in the dining room and upstairs, and modernizing the kitchen.
When Ted Houghton died in 1956, Martha began to spend most of her time at the family ranch in Channing. And so, in 1965, upon the urging of her daughter and League member, Martha Houghton Garner, Mrs. Houghton donated Shelton-Houghton House to the Junior League. The home has remained very much as it was when occupied by the original owners. In most instances, only the functions and furnishings of various rooms differ from the original.
In 1981, after lengthy application and diligent work by the League, Shelton-Houghton House received both Texas Marker and National Register plaques, identifying the structure as an official historical landmark.2

David E. Houghton, 42, born August 12, 1953, died June 11, 1996, after a long illness. Friends and family are invited to a memorial service on Sunday, June 23, at 4 p.m. at Bill Wenzel's house, 3714 Madison, Kansas City, MO. A sixth generation Kansas Citian, his ancestors came here in covered wagons and were large land owners in downtown Kansas City. Mr. Houghton attended Barstow School and graduated from Southwest High School. He attended the University of Missouri at Kansas City and the Conservatory of Music, then studied flute at the University of Arizona. He earned a degree in landscape architecture from the University of Arizona in Tucson, where he lived until his death. He was a student of the martial arts, Tae Kwan Do and Tai Chi, all of his adult life. A landscape architect and avid gardener, he belonged to the Men's Garden Club o f Tucson. For several years he owned and managed a vegetarian and health food service at the university. A talented musician, he played any wind instrument and the piano and accordian. He will be missed by a wide circle of friends both here and in Arizona. He leaves his wife, Debra Cady Houghton, of the home; his two sons, Tyler Beals Houghton and Ian Easton Houghton; his three sisters, Sallie Houghton Capen, Olathe, KS, Cindy Eackert, Okmulgee, OK, and Elizabeth Stafford, Maysville, OK; his moth er, Patricia Marty Houghton, Spring Hill, KS; and his father, George Winram Houghton, Okmulgee, OK. Biography2006Ted Houghton is a commissioner of the Texas Transportation Commission, which oversees statewide activities of the Texas Department of Transportation. Gov. Rick Perry appointed him to the commission in December 2003.
A native of El Paso, Houghton is self-employed in the professional fields of financial services, executive benefits, and estate planning. He is the first resident of El Paso to serve on the commission.
Houghton has served on the School Land Board. He also served for eight years on the El Paso Water Utilities Public Service Board. For El Paso's Rapid Transit Board, he served as vice president, chair of the public relations and communications committee, and treasurer of the political action committee. He also served on the board of directors of the El Paso Electric Company and as president of the Sun Bowl Association. He was a member of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Committee.
Ted is married to Hettie Cardon Houghton and they have five children — Jennifer Houghton Lindsay, Cinco, John, Michael and Chris Houghton.4

ObituaryJan 14, 2017John Malcolm Houghton passed away on Tuesday, January 10 surrounded by his wife and two sisters. Malcolm was born on May 13, 1955 to E.C. "Ted" Houghton III and Marietta Bunsen Houghton. A lifelong resident of El Paso, Malcolm graduated from Coronado in 1973 and attended Texas Tech University. Previously considered a confirmed bachelor, Malcolm found the person he had waited so long for and married Susan, the love of his life, in 2006. Their wedding brought together friends and family from around the world eager to witness a love story fifty years in the making. Together, they traveled to Costa Rica, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Venezuela; and in recent years put Malcolm's talents to work updating and renovating El Paso homes. Malcolm will be remembered by many for his quiet kindness and generosity. His talents enabled him to find and fix anything; while his heart compelled him to aid and love others without asking for anything in return or ever mentioning his actions. The stories that begin, "One time, Malcolm helped me…" will be told for years to come. Malcolm is survived by his wife Susan, mother Marietta, siblings Ted, Marcy, Linda, George and Brian, eleven nieces and nephews and Sue's two children and five grandchildren. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00am on Monday, January 16, 2017 at St. Matthew Catholic, 400 West Sunset, El Paso, Texas. Inurnment will follow at Memory Gardens of the Valley in Santa Teresa, NM.
