LCPL Jarod L. Houghton, 22, died unexpectedly in the line of duty on Saturday, August 2, 2003.The son of Janice Fuller and Alfred Houghton Jr., he was a graduate of Newfield High School and Parris Island USMC stationed at Cherry Point, NC after completing a tour of duty in Okinawa.He is survived by his stepfather, Harold Pierce; brothers, Alfred Houghton III and Alex Houghton; grandparents, James and Delores Fuller; aunts and uncles, Jeanette Zimmer, Joan and Don Goodier, Jinny and Steve Gardner, Jane and Bill Witkowski, Anna C. Callahan, Malcolm Houghton; cousins, Fay Murphy, Jeannine Russell, Jackie Brock, Jim Guthrie, Jennifer Guthrie, and Kacie Witkowski; also aunts and uncles, Harold and Helen Rorick, Debbie Houghton, Janet Houghton, and Paul Houghton.Graveside services and interment with full military honors at Woodlawn National Cemetery will be held Friday, August 8, 2003 at 11 a.m. Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Bangs Funeral Home.In lieu of flowers, donations in Jarod's memory may be made to Cops, Kids and Toys, c/o Officer Michael Koval, Ithaca Police Department.

Mrs. Lucetta Houghton, 84, of Brick died yesterday in the Meridian Nursing Home, Brick.

Services will be at 8:30 o'clock tomorrow evening in the Weatherhead Young Funeral Home, 885 Mantoloking Rd., Brick.

Mrs. Houghton was a guidance counselor at West Essex Regional High School, North Caldwell, for many years before retiring in 1970.

She received bachelor's and master's degrees from Trenton State College and a doctorate from New York University.

Born in Newark, she lived in North Caldwell before moving to Brick in 1969.

Mrs. Houghton is survived by Robert, her husband of 58 years²

Charles Raymond Houghton "Charlie", 81, a three year resident of Annapolis and formerly a resident of Herald Harbour and Chestnut Hill Cove, died on Saturday, August 1 at his home. Born on June 9, 1934 in West Virginia, Charlie was a meat cutter with several local grocery stores. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, sports, bird watching and going to the Eastern Shore. Charlie will be greatly missed by his loved ones, Annie, Nick, Tara and Buddy the Dog. He was preceded in death by his brother, Joe Houghton. Charlie is survived by his longtime companion, Annette Cavaselis Strauss; his sisters, Joann Tyner and Nancy (Rusty) Adams and two nieces, Karen and Sheila. A graveside military service will be held at 11:30 am on Tuesday, August 11 at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery Chapel, 1122 Sunrise Beach Rd., Crownsville, MD. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 90 Ritchie Hwy., Pasadena, MD 21122 or Partners in Care, 90-B Ritchie Hwy., Pasadena, MD 21122.

LAKELAND -- After suffering an injury during the Vietnam War that was said to leave him unable to ever walk again, Mr. William Kenneth Houghton decided to choose a career in physical therapy. "He truly had a gift for what he did because anybody at Lakeland Regional Medical Center would tell you that when there was a difficult patient, all they had to do was call on Bill," his wife Linda Marie Houghton, said, describing him as a soft-spoken gentleman with a kind, sweet spirit. The retired physical therapist's assistant died of liver cancer Friday (June 6, 2003) at Tampa General Hospital. He was 56. "He loved the Lord and he felt his gift came from the Lord and that he would have never gone into this field if he had never had the injury that he did," she said. The couple would have celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary June 16. Born in Ithaca, N.Y., on Sept. 16, 1946, he served in the Marine Corps in the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1968. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his heroism during the war where he stepped on a land mine, losing his leg from above the knee. "Through his rehabilitation, he decided to become a physical therapist's assistant. He graduated in the first class at Miami Dade Community College," Linda Houghton said. Mr. Houghton's career in physical therapy spanned 30 years, including the 11 years he worked at Lakeland Regional Medical Center after the family came to Lakeland from Miami in 1982. He was named Employee of the Month for December 1995 and taught orientation classes at the hospital. He retired in September 2001. He enjoyed bass fishing, entering tournaments every year through the Ranger Bass Boat Tournament. He also enjoyed woodworking and was a member of the Ridge Woodcarvers Club of Lakeland. He was a former Sunday school teacher and member of Fellowship Baptist Church, where he worked with the junior church ministry. In addition to his wife, Mr. Houghton is survived by his sons, William Houghton Jr. and Welbie Houghton, both of Lakeland, and Christopher Houghton, Mesa, Ariz; daughter, Amy Kennedy, Wilmington, Del; mother, Betty Houghton, Kissimmee; father, Welbie Houghton, Kissimmee; brother, John Houghton, Kissimmee; and sisters, Daya Patton, Rochester, N.Y., and Joy Woosley, Tampa. Visitation will be from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday at Fellowship Baptist Church, 4625 Cleveland Heights Blvd. Services will follow at 5 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell. Lakeland Funeral Home.
