Silas Milo Houghton Jr., 83, died peacefully at his home on Lake Salem in Derby on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010. His beloved caregiver and dear friend Barbara Norton held his hand as he passed.

Si was born in Lyndon, Vt., on Aug. 8, 1926, to Silas Milo Houghton Sr. and Mary (Davidson) Houghton. He attended the Red Village school, a one-room school house, and Lyndon Institute. After graduation he joined the Navy and served until the end of World War II. He met his first wife, Pearl M. Day of Newport, while she attended Lyndon State Teachers College. They were married on Christmas Eve, 1945.

In 1948 Si and Pearl made their home on the shore of Lake Salem in Derby, a place they loved and where he requested that he spend his last days. When first married he worked for a year as both a farm hand and gas station attendant in Derby Line. Si joined Butterfields Division of Litton Industries in 1947. He began as a machine operator and retired in 1967 as plant manager. In the inaugural year of North Country Union High School, he taught machine shop and mechanical drawing in the Vocational Education Department. After 26 years of marriage, Pearl died in 1972.

After Pearl's death he left North Country to become a full-time, dorm-residing, 46-year-old student at Vermont Technical College in Randolph, where he earned an associates degree with honors in civil engineering in 1975. He returned to NCUHS and rejoined the vocational education department. In 1978, while teaching, he also attended the University of Vermont, graduating with a bachelor's degree in education. He met his second wife, Deane (Moore) Hamilton at North Country and they were married in 1979. He retired as director of vocational education at NCUHS in 1988. After 25 years of marriage, Deane predeceased him in 2004. After Deane's death, Si said that he had been blessed to have been married to two of the most wonderful women in the world.

Si was generous with his time, serving as a literacy volunteer in the prison system, a guardian ad litem, a volunteer at the United Church of Newport food shelf and an enthusiastic supporter of the Area Agency on Aging in Newport. He was a member of the Derby Lions Club, serving as president for several years.

Si was once a hunter and became a guy who loved to walk in the woods in deer season while carrying a rifle. As a younger man he enjoyed curling, water-skiing, and he was quite the ping-pong player. He loved to fish, canoe, kayak and hike, and was a prodigious organic gardener. After he retired he made high-quality furniture for Deane and their children. For several years he operated his own maple sugar house in Lyndon on land he inherited from his parents. He enjoyed travel, politics, playing bridge, chopping wood and driving his tractor. Si was a life-long resident of Vermont, a great story-teller and could tell a joke with what can only be characterized as a Vermont sensibility.

He is survived by his daughters, M. Leslie Klisz and her husband Stephen of Marcellus, N.Y., and Carolyn Houghton and her husband David Sodano of Medford, Mass; grandson Jeffrey Klisz of Marcellus, N.Y; sister Carolyn Johnson and her husband Ted of Ascutney; brothers Walter "Joe" and his wife Ruth, and Nathan and his wife Fran of Lyndonville; stepchildren Frank and John Hamilton, and Linda Oliver; nieces Judy Block, Vicky O'Keefe, Robin Hartsock, Alison Raymond, Carmen Houghton and Margaret Streeter; nephews Burkett, Bruce and Brian Houghton, and Howard and Jonathan Day; many beloved great-nieces and great-nephews; step-grandchildren Douglas, Andrew and Peter Oliver, Cory Whelihan, Scott, Reese, Ruth, Troy and Ben Hamilton; many treasured great-grandchildren; and dear friend Ingrid Christman.

His niece Penelope (Day) Yakubek and nephew Silas Houghton predeceased him.

A memorial service to celebrate Si's life will be held at United Church of Newport on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Church of Newport Food Shelf or the Salvation Army.⁹

Obituary

Obituary: Raymond L. Houghton, Jr.

Raymond L. Houghton, Jr., age 87, of Woodward Road, Concord, passed away at his home, Saturday evening, September 21, 2019, from cancer.

Ray was born in Barre, VT, on October 19, 1931, son to the late Raymond, Sr. and Doris (Phelps) Houghton. He was raised and educated in Marshfield and served in the U.S. Army from 1948-52 stationed in Europe during the Korean War. Raymond was custodian at the Lunenberg School for 15 years. In 1964 Ray moved to Concord, VT. On May 7, 1983 he married Doris Stuart and they built their home on Stuart’s Mountain. Ray was a life member of the DAV, enjoyed crafts, crocheting, camping, woodworking and gardening. Life with family was absolutely everything to Raymond and he will be dearly missed by them all.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years, Doris Houghton of Concord, children: Crystal Deck of Newcastle, CA, Mark Bristol (Stacia) of Kirby, Wayne Houghton (Phyllis) of Chesapeake, VA, Denise Bristol (Brian) of Portland, OR, Jake Bristol (Toni) of Concord, Karen Houghton of Skowhegan, ME, Michael Bristol (Jackie) of St. Albans, VT. Sister Freda Croteau of Berlin, VT, sister-in-law Maddy Beagle of Concord. A special nephew Norman Olden (Barbara) of Concord. 11 grandchildren: 16 great-grandchildren and lots of nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by 4 brothers: Robert, Richard, Randall and Romaine Houghton.

A Graveside service with military honors will take place at 11AM on Thursday, September 26, 2019, at the Concord Village Cemetery on Prospect Street. The Rev. Wayne Houghton will officiate for his father’s service.

A reception will be held immediately following at the Concord Community Church, 481 Main Street.
