RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) -- Dean Houghton, high school principal at the Mill River Union School in Clarendon from 1975 to 1990, and who was known as "Mr. Mill River," died Tuesday at his home in Rutland Town. He was 71.

When Mr. Houghton arrived in the area, the union towns of Clarendon, Shrewsbury, and Wallingford were building the school. As a result, he and then-school Superintendent Henry Burnham got to hire the entire staff, order all furniture and supplies, and create a curriculum from scratch. He became known as Mr. Mill River

Before Mill River, Mr. Houghton worked at Poultney High School for 23 years -- the first 10 as a teacher, the next 13 as principal.

Throughout his tenure at Poultney, he also coached sports -- baseball for four years, basketball for 13 (winning three state championships), and football for all 23 (winning five state championships).

Mr. Houghton was honored as principal of the year in 1979 by the Vermont Headmasters Association and, in 1980, was honored again by the association with the Robert F. Pierce Memorial Award for youth service. The National Association of Secondary School Principals presented him with a similar statewide honor in 1984.

He leaves his wife, Kathleen (McGrath); two sons, Steven of Manchester and Jeffrey of Poultney; a daughter, Sandra Munson of Williston; two stepdaughters, Kimberly Ridlon of Shrewsbury and Ronna Hebert of Rutland; a stepson, Jeffrey Hebert of Shrewsbury, and his mother, Mary, of Manchester.

The Tossing Funeral Home in Rutland handled arrangements for the funeral, which was held yesterday at 1 p.m. in the Grace Congregational Church with burial following in the Evergreen Cemetery.

Barre, VT, USA, Mrs. Doris P. Houghton MARSHFIELD - Mrs. Doris P. Houghton, 71, a lifelong resident here, died Monday in the Central Vermont Hospital, Berlin. Born in Cabot, Oct. 21, 1907, she was daugher of Frank and Charlotte (McKinstry) Phelps. She was married to Raymond L. Houghton, who died April 8, 1977. Mrs. Houghton had been employed 10 years as cook at Goddard College. She was a member of the United Church of Marshfield and a past grand chief of the Vermont Pythian Sisters. Surviving are four sons, Richard, Robert and Randall Houghton, all of Marshfield, and Raymond Houghton Jr., Concord; a daughter, Mrs. Carl (Freda) Croteau, Barre; 19 grandchildren; seven greatgrandchildren, nieces and nephews. Another daughter, Frances, died in 1933. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the United Church of Marshfield with the Rev. David McBride officiating. Burial will be in the South Cabot Cemetery.

BERLIN - Mrs. Arlene M. Houghton, 75, died at her home on February 27, 2001.

She was born on February 26, 1926, in Montpelier to Sylvanus F. and Edna M. (Ormsbee) Morse. She was raised in East Montpelier where she attended Cutler Elementary School and then graduated from Montpelier High School in 1944. On February 7, 1953, she married Romaine M. Houghton of Marshfield.

She worked for Green Mountain Power from 1944 to 1953; Richards and Perolini's until 1970; and then the City of Montpelier where she retired in 1988. Her love for her fellow employees and dealing with people took her back to City Hall where she volunteered for five years and then was hired on a part-time basis for the following six years until her hard-fought battle with cancer began in February, 2000.

Arlene enjoyed times of laughter with family and friends, traveling, camping, dancing, embroidering, gardening, listening to sports events with her walkman and "attempting" to teach her daughters and grandchildren how to play cribbage!

Besides her husband, Romaine, Arlene leaves two daughters, Linda Houghton of Dallas, Texas and Sandra Gordon of Berlin, Vermont; three grandsons, Douglas, Chad and Justin (JP) Gordon of Berlin; one sister, Esther Partridge of Montpelier; two brothers, Cyrus Morse of Montpelier and Harold Morse of E. Hartford, Connecticut; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters Helen Brown and Katherine Carey, and brothers Stanley Morse, Clifton Morse and Wendell Morse.

There will be no calling hours; a graveside service will be held at the Plain-Mont Cemetery in East Montpelier at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Vermont Home Health & Hospice, Inc., 600 Granger Road, Barre, Vermont 05641.

The Barber & Lanier Funeral Home, 139 Main Street, Montpelier, is in charge of arrangements. *⁶
