Eric Williams: As follow up to your July email. I offer the following: your short question "do the two files match or belong together with the Father Edward J. Houghton". Yes.

Daniel Houghton was the son of Edward and Ellen. The same parents of Richard Houghton, my grandfather Edward Houghton and Michael Houghton. A daughter Mary is also listed by my aunt's letter although I have never come across any genealogy records to prove this.

But keep in mind, I suspect Edward Houghton and Ellen McCusken had many children that we are unaware of. Records indicate Richard was born in 1810, Edward between 1815 to 1820, Michael was born in 1827 and finally Daniel was born between 1830 to 1835. That's a big spread or gap in years between brothers... who was born in the gap years. Also, note that this family lived in Donegal Ireland. I have many paper references to establish this as fact.

Additional information on Daniel Houghton.

He married Bridget Gill and they had two daughters and two sons. All of their children were born in Donegal Ireland. It appears that Dan and his wife along with both sons immigrated to the USA in 1879. Their oldest daughter Mary T came to the States in 1868 and Bridget came over in 1890.

Mary T. Houghton born in 1851 has direct ties to my great cousin Andy Houghton, son of Richard Houghton born 1810 died in Boston Feb 1860. The obituaries of Andy and Mary list them as family. See the May 1922 obit of Andy... Mary is listed as Andy's cousin and both lived at 27 Carruth St in Ashmont Ma. In Mary's obit 1941, Andy is mistakenly listed as her brother. I believe the children were confused, because my understanding is that many of the cousins referred to Andy as their uncle. See Kate's letter dated 1958. By the way, Mary T. Houghton married a Thomas Houghton in 1873, but this Tom is NOT Andy's brother.

Additional facts: Mary T. Houghton 1873 marriage certificate list her parents as Daniel Houghton and Bridget Gill. The 1910 federal census list Bridget as living with her sister at 27 Carruth St. Also, some of Neil's children are listed as being with Mary in this census as well. Her brother Neil died in 1901 and left several young children. See my chart below.
