Grace W. Houghton

CABOT, VT - Grace W. Houghton, 86, a long-time Cabot resident, died Monday, April 3, 2006, at the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin, where she had made her home since June 2005.

She was born March 13, 1920, in Marshfield, the daughter of the late Fred and Florence (Sprague) Wheeler. She attended Cabot public schools and graduated from Cabot High School in the class of 1938. She later graduated from Lyndon Normal School in Lyndonville.

On Sept. 25, 1941, she married Elliot Caroll Houghton in Springfield, Mass. They owned and operated the lower Cabot General Store for several years before moving to Amherst, Mass., where she was a cook at the QTV fraternity at University of Massachusetts. She later was the bookkeeper for the family owned business, the Bernardston Grain Co. Inc., in Bernardston. In 1980, she and her husband returned to the Houghton family homestead in Cabot, where they lived during the summer months and traveled to Winter Haven, Fla., for the winter months. In 1999, Grace sold her home in Florida and remained in Cabot to be close to family and friends.

She was a very active member of the United Church of Cabot, the ladies organization of that church, and the Bible study group. Grace enjoyed vegetable gardening and cooking. She was an avid sports fan, especially enjoying the Boston Red Sox and UMass basketball. She will be remembered for her wonderful macaroni and cheese and salmon pea wiggle. She was a very loving mother and grandmother. She was a lady of great faith, who was always very supportive of everyone in her family.

Survivors include a son, Ronald Houghton, and his wife Marsha MacVicar of Greenfield, Mass; a daughter, Marcia Pelletier, and her husband Robert of Bow, N.H; three grandchildren, Jacquelyn Karra Houghton of Greenfield, Mass., Charleen Parsons and Robert Pelletier Jr., both of Windham, N.H; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Edward Wheeler of Danville and Donald Wheeler of New Sharon, Maine; three sisters, Sandra Wheeler of New Sharon, Maine, Mae Williams of Cranston, R.I., and Freda Burke of Rutland; several nieces and nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband Elliot in 1996; three brothers, Ernest, George and Stanley; and two sisters, Elizabeth Stinchfield and Mabel Scott.

Visiting hours will be held Friday evening, 6-8 p.m. at the Northern Vermont Funeral Home, 60 Elm St., Hardwick.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 8, 2006, at 1 p.m. at the United Church of Cabot with Rev. William Cob officiating. Burial will be held later in the spring in the family lot in the Village Cemetery in Cabot.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the United Church of Cabot, c/o Blanche Lamore, 1067 West Hill Pond Road, Marshfield, VT 05658.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Northern Vermont Funeral Service in Hardwick.²

Michael J. Houghton, 69, of Nashua NH, passed away Oct. 24, 2012, at St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua. Michael was born in Germany on Aug. 29, 1943. He was the husband of Patricia (Vlaun) Houghton of Nashua. Michael had been a longtime Nashua resident. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Prior to his retirement, Michael had been employed by Bellavance Beverage as a delivery driver. He loved doing puzzles, especially crosswords. Michael was an avid sports fan who enjoyed watching the Patriots and the Red Sox.Besides his wife, Michael is survived by his sons Michael Houghton and Andrew Houghton.

Died in California.
The many acquaintances and friends of Mark Jones will be sorry to hear of his death, which occurred in California May 30. He had been ill in the for three weeks with acute illness of the stomach and bowels. Mark Jone* was born in East Barnet, Feb. 15, 1844 and was the youngest of 11 children born to Ira and Kuby 'Bacon) Jones, and was the last of his family He was married in March, 1865, to Plooma _ of St. Johnsbury. Three children were born to them, but all died in infancy. The first years of their married life were spent in Barnet. From there they moved to California, and buried their little son out there. Returning from California they came to Concord and lived here many years, where he was engaged in the meat business. From here they moved to Providence, K. I., and thence to Melrose, Mass., and for the past few years had lived in California, w here he w as raising oranges. He was a member of Moose River Lodge, No. 82. F. and A. M. His body has been cremated and the ashes will be brought to East Barnet for burial as soon as Mrs. Jones can close the business out there. She will reside here in Vermont with her relatives.

Deceased Name: Mabel Antoinette (Westover) Houghton
Mabel Antoinette (Westover) Houghton passed to her final resting place on March 15, at her home surrounded by family and friends. She was blessed to have many wonderful caregivers in her life, including Erlene Laura and her great-granddaughter, Katie Tanner. Mabel was born in Richford on leap year Feb. 29, 1916. She lived her early years in Richford, Georgia, and North Troy.

Her mother passed at an early age and Mabel lived with her grandparents, Ed and Lillian Laflamme. She married William Santaw and together they had three adoring daughters: Eleanor, Agnes, and Lorraine. Together they lived in many places, including North Troy, Miles Pond, Concert, and St. Johnsbury.

Mabel remarried later in life to Ralph Houghton. Both husbands predeceased her. Mabel worked her entire life to support herself and her children. She worked in the local glove factory for 35 years and managed to buy her own home. This was no small feat for a woman of such meager beginnings. She knew the value of hard work and never feared it. She instilled in her children the meaning of hard work and a good heart. Mabel never turned anyone away from her table.

Mabel was a generous, loving woman who loved gardening, family and children. Mabel loved a child's smile and was warmed by the love of her family. Her daughters were devoted and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren loved her with all their hearts. The world truly was a greater place because she was in it.

Mabel was predeceased by many of her family, including parents, grandparents, two brothers, three sisters, a son-in-law, and a granddaughter, Sandra (Fox) Carpenter. She will be missed by her daughter, Agnes (Fox) Anderson and husband, Bacil, Norma (Fox) Racine, Nancy (Fox) Newton and family, Sandra's family, Susan (Fox) Tanner and family, and Monica (Fox) Burnor and family. She is survived by not only the above, but daughters, Eleanor and Lorraine of Waterford; and brother, Harland Westover and wife, Teresa, and Doris (Westover) Bowen and Theresa (Westover) Bruce. She leaves eight grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 19, at the Sayles Funeral Home in St. Johnsbury. Visiting hours start at 9 a.m. with services at 11.

Mabel's family would like to extend a special thanks to grandson, Jeff Racine, and great-granddaughter, Hollie Tanner, for their spectacular care in her final days.³
