John was born on 20 April 1843 in Ludborough, Lincolnshire, England.4,9,7,10,5,8 John married Emma Jane Wales on 31 January 1865 in Brunswick Wesleyan Chapel, Leeds, Yorkshire, England.1,11,9,10,8 He died on 13 July 1928 in Nelson, New Zealand, at age 85.5 John Hobson White was buried in Richmond Cemetery, Richmond, Tasman District, New Zealand.5
He and Emma Jane Wales emigrated with Harold Temple, Mary Lizzie and George Herbert in 1893 from England to New Zealand.

July 25, 2001 Barbara Wells wrote:
John Hobson White was an Immigration Agent in England and responsible for the immigration of thousands of English farm workers to NZ & Queensland, Australia in the late 1800s. He is well documented in NZ. We have a book that devotes a whole chapter to him & he also features in our big new Museum of NZ in Wellington. He himself didn't come here until 1893. Several of his brothers & sisters also came to NZ before him. He lived here where we live now with Peter's grandparents in the later years of his life & is buried in the cemetery near by. It is a wonder he lived to come to NZ as he was not at all popular with the Lincolnshire farmers in encouraging the English farm workers to immigrate & better themselves. It is a miracle he wasn't lynched from what we've read.12,13,14
John Hobson White was a Home Missionary - N.Z. Methodist Church in New Zealand. He was the officiating minister at the burial of Emma Jane Wales on 20 September 1912 in Patea General Wesleyan Cemetery, Taranaki, New Zealand.15,16 Rev. J H White was listed as a survivor in the obituary of Joseph Temple White who died 1 August 1918, Joseph's brother.6,17,18,19 John Hobson White was listed as predeceased in the obituary of Harold Temple White who died 8 September 1972, Harold's father.20

Wedding
Nesbitt - Lycett

Newcastle United Church was the scene of a quiet but pretty wedding on Saturday evening, April 25th, when Miss Helen May Lycett, Newcastle, daughter of Mr. Alfred Lycett, Delhi, Ont., and granddaughter of Mr. Thomas Moffat, Newcastle, was united in marriage with L.A.C. Jack Nesbitt of the R.C.A.F., son of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Nesbitt, Port Granby. Rev. R. E. Morton officiated at the candlelight service. The church was beautifully decorated with red and white snapdragons and lilies and the guest pews were marked with patriotic flags. The bride looked lovely in a wedding gown of romance blue with matching hat and accessories of navy blue. She carried a nosegay of pink roses. The bridesmaid was her sister, Miss Marjory Lycett, wearing a beige redingote, with matching hat and brown accessories. Mr. Newton Ashton, Bowmanville, was groomsman. Mr. Laurence Morton played the wedding music and during the register Mr. George A. Walton sang, O Promise Me.

Following the ceremony a reception and wedding luncheon was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. A. Walton, Mrs. Alf. Lycett, mother of the bride, gowned in navy blue; and Mrs. Nelson Nesbitt, mother of the groom, wearing gray. The house was beautifully decorated in a color scheme of red, white and blue, featuring R.C.A.F. candles.

The bride cut the wedding cake and Mr. Geo. A. Walton, proposed the toast to the bride and groom. Short speeches were made by Rev. R. E. Morton, Mr. Nelson Nesbitt, Mr. Alfred Lycett and Mr. Garnet Rickard, felicitating the young couple. Later Mr. and Mrs. Jack Nesbitt left on a wedding trip to Western Ontario, the bride travelling in a gray, tailor-made suit with navy accessories, and with a red fox fur, the gift of the groom.

Previous to her marriage the bride received many handsome and useful wedding gifts from relatives and friends. She has been on the teaching staff of the Albert St. school, Oshawa, where her fellow teachers gave her a prenuptial shower. She was also the guest of honour and recipient of a shower at a house party of some friends in Oshawa. The groom has just completed a course as a radio technician at the University of Western Ontario. London, standing second in his class. He has received instructions to report at Manning Pool, Toronto, on May 4th.5

Several changes were announced recently by the department of agriculture, effective August 1st. One move is of particular interest to this area because it concerns a former Shaw's district boy -- Mr. W. N. T. "Newt" Ashton, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Ashton.

Mr. Ashton, who resides in Napanee, has been provincial agricultural representative o Lennox and Addington County for the past 12 years. He has been transferred to Perth County, with headquarters at Stratford.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Ashton, who was Marjorie Lycett of Newcastle, have participated actively in welfare and community work in Napanee. Just recently he was elected president of Napanee Rotary Club.

When the Napanee cancer society was founded several years ago, he was its first chairman. His wife is president of the women's federation of Trinity United Church and also heads the LA association of the Girl Guides. Both Mr. and Mrs. Ashton curl.
