LOS ANGELES — Services for James I. Haughton of Los Angeles were at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Church of the Hills with the Rev. L.C. Jackson officiating. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery under direction of Forest Lawn with military honors conducted by American Legion Post No. 228. Haughton, 76, died Oct. 26 in Los Angeles. He was a native of Napoleonville, La., and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was the son of the late Rev. and Mrs. Henry Haughton.      “     
Survivors include his wife, Ida Owens Haughton of Los Angeles; ne son, James Haughton Jr. of Oakland; one daughter, Odile Haughton of Los Angeles; five brothers, Claybourne Haughton and Warren Haughton, both of Los Angeles, the Rev. G.R. Haughton of Alexandria, La., and the Rev. Harold Haughton and Ellis Haugh- on, both of New Orleans; one sis- er, Rebecca Parker of Napoleon- ville. La; and four grandchildren.

ObituaryDec 12, 1989The Rev. Gilbert Royal Haughton, a civic and religious leader who worked for improved race relations, has died at the age of 75. Haughton, an Alexandria minister who retired as a pastor nine years ago but re mained active in religious and community affairs, died Satur day in St. Frances Cabrini Hospital. Services for Haughton will be at I p.m. Wednesday in Bethel A.M.E. Church with the Rev. Lester Shaw officiating. Entombment will be in Gardien of Memories Mausoleum under direction of Winnfield.
Haughton organized the first black Cub and Boy Scout troops in Louisiana and Mississippi. He served the African Meth odist Episcopal Church for 57 years, including stints as district superintendent of Sunday schools, evangelist, pastor, act18 preSLIDs Einer, dreCtOr of religious education, dean of education. director of social actions. director of Scouting and Episcopal district director of special development. He was a delegate to the general conference of the A.M.E. Church from 1944 to 1980. Haughton was a native of Naleonville and a lifetime memberr of the NAACP. He was a graduate of Campbell College, Southern University and Lampton Theological Seminary in Jackson. Miss. He received an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Monrovia College, Republic of Liberia, Africa. Haughton built Bethel A. M. E. Church and the Bethel Apartments in Alexandria.
He served as pastor of churches in Alexandria, Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Mansfield. He retired from the pastorage of Bethel A.M.E. Church in 1980.
He served as a member of the executive board of Cenia Community Action Committee, National Council of Churches, CAUSA-USA, Committee on Alcohol, Rapides Parish School Board Biracial Committee, Kisatchie-Delta Economic Development District Council, Committee of Concern in Alexandria, Alexandria Committee on Human Relations, International Platform Association and Central Cities Development Corp.

He was a co-founder of the Delta Negro Leadership Council Greenville, Miss, served as national chaplain of the Elks Club of America and
was a member of the Elks Hub City Lodge No. also a member Lodge No. 43, F&AM and the No. 181 Shrine 646. He was of the Acme Prince Hall Jaffa Temple.
Survivors include his wife, M. Grover Haughton of Alexandria; three sons, the Rev. Gilbert Washington of New Orleans, Harold Haughton of Petersburg, Va., and James Haughton of San Antonio, Texas; four brothers, Ellis Haughton and the Rev. Harold Haughton, both of New Orleans, and Claiborne Haugh ton and Warren Haughton, both of Los Angeles, Calif; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
