Shirley was born to J.L. 'Lawrence' and Florence De Walt in Hammonton, New Jersey. Her family moved to Sarasota, FL where she was a graduate of Sarasota High School class of 1946. While still in High School, she became the color artist for the Sunday Edition of the comic strip 'Alley Oop' working for its creator V.T. Hamlin. Shirley later married H.J. 'Bill' Houghton and settled in the Venice/Nokomis area of Sarasota County where she raised her two children, Holly Virginia & Wm. Yale. She loved animals and was always adopting and fostering cats and dogs, even as a child. Shirley owned and operated her dog grooming business 'The Bow Wow Boutique' in two locations for many years before selling the Venice business. Shirley retired and closed the 'The Bow Wow Boutique' in Nokomis in 2004. She moved briefly to the North Central Florida area of Old Town in Dixie County then later moved to Port Charlotte, FL until her death. Shirley held officer positions and active memberships in the Pilot Club International, and American Business Women's Assn. and she was a strong supporter of the Suncoast Humane Society and the United States Humane Society. She is survived by her daughter, Holly V. Houghton of Old Town, FL; her son and daughter in law, Wm. Yale (Tarin) Houghton Sr. of Pt. Charlotte, FL. Her grandsons; Wm. 'Bill' Yale Houghton Jr. & Kyle J. Houghton both of Pt. Charlotte, FL and great grand-children; Raina Houghton & Jasper Houghton. Arrangements were by Farley Funeral Home in Venice.
