Frances was born Oct. 13, 1935, to the late Walter and Mary Houghton in Washington, D.C. Frances was active with 4H in Greenwood Grange Hall, she was also in- volved with starting the Johnson County Girls Athletic Associa- tion. She worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse for the University of Kansas Medical Center before retiring. After retirement, Frances looked forward to her weekly Bridge game. She is also preceded in death by her sister, Grace Lou Jean Whited and three grandchildren, Stephen Sears, Andrew Sears, Marco Co- hen. Frances is survived by her six children, Malinda (Rocky) Porter; Charissa McGuire; Tom (Janet) Sears; James Francis (Glenda) Sears; Vincent Sears; Jennifer (Ed) Drake; a brother, Kenneth (Fran) Houghton; 19 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren.

EAST ORLEANS - Elizabeth C. "Betsy" (Perry) Houghton, 87, died Feb. 1, 2008, at LTCF Quaboag on the Common in West Brookfield.

She was born in West Medford, the daughter of the late Walter G. and Marguerite (Crocker) Perry. She was predeceased by her older brother, Walter Perry in 2006. Having grown up in West Medford with summers spent in Brewster Park, she graduated from Medford High School in 1938, and went on to study at what was then Mary Washington College in Virginia. She loved horseback riding and was an accomplished pianist.

In 1948, she married Wallace R. Houghton of Hingham, with whom she shared 55 years, before his death in 2003. They were the former owners of the South Wellfleet General Store for almost 35 years.

She is survived by her three children, daughters, Janet Moore and her husband Douglas of Warren, and the Rev. Margaret H. Minnick and her husband the Rev. David Minnick of Middletown, Conn; and a son, Robert W. Houghton and his two children, Saisha Costello-Houghton and Shawn Houghton of Mt. Shasta, Calif.

Elizabeth raised her family in Hingham, attending the church of St. John the Evangelist. She was busy in civic theatre and Girl Scouts. In 1966, the family moved to East Orleans, where she worked in the post office. She was a communicant at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Orleans, and was active in Christian Outreach Ministries. Besides being an avid Red Sox fan, Elizabeth was an anglophile, enjoying several trips to the British Isles with family and friends. Her love of music remained all her life, enabling her to ring with the Quaboag Chimers for the last two years.

A memorial service will take place on Saturday, March 8, 2008, at 11 a.m., at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Orleans. Burial will be in the columbarium.

Memorial donations in her name can be made to the Church of the Holy Spirit Memorial Fund.1

OAKFIELD -- Joan C. Houghton, 55, died Friday (March 28, 2003) in the Hospice Unit at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia after battling cancer for many years.

Mrs. Houghton was born in Batavia Dec. 7, 1947 and grew up in Akron. She graduated from Buffalo General Hospital School of Nursing and, in 1971, moved to Oakfield where she spent the rest of her life.

She was a caring mother of two, a loving wife and a dedicated only daughter.

Mrs. Houghton was a homemaker, who formerly held secretarial positons for the United Methodist Church in Oakfield and the Oakfield village office. She also held a variety of nursing positions over the years.

Her hobbies included gardening, decorating and caring for animals. She was very active in the Oakfield United Methodist Church, participating in Carers & Sharers, the local Thrift Shop, church dinners and church choir, wrote for the church newsletter and participated in various fund-raising activities such as the Labor Day Pie Sale.

She will be remembered for her willingness to share kind words, send cards and give gifts of comfort to others.

Surviving are her parents, John and Viola Spaeth, her husband, Jim Houghton; a daughter, Rebecca (Matthew) Davidson; a son, Andrew (Theresa) Houghton, and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. April 5 at the Oakfield United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Cary Cemetery, Oakfield.

Memorials may be made to the church, the Oakfield Fire Department or HomeCare and Hospice of Batavia.

Arrangements were completed by Burdette & Sanford Funeral Home in Oakfield.1

GREENFIELD -- Theodore Houghton Jr., 72, of 4 Holland Ave. died Wednesday (4-9-03) at home.

Born in Worcester on Aug. 9, 1930, he was the son of Theodore and Esther (Berg) Houghton.

A 1949 graduate of the former Arms Academy in Shelburne Falls, he also attended Northeastern University.

On May 22, 1954, he was married to the former Constance Kasta in Worcester.

He served as a sergeant in the Army during the Korean War.

Having been employed with several nuclear power plants throughout the country, he retired in 1990 from Ebasco Corp. in New York City. He held different positions including shift supervisor, senior reactor operator and nuclear consultant. After his retirement, he served as a bus driver for the Greenfield school system as well as local transportation in Greenfield.

He received the Eagle Scout honor badge when he was younger. He enjoyed working around his home as well as hunting and fishing.

Besides his wife of 48 years, he leaves two sons, Bruce of Greenfield, and Mark and his wife Rachel of Poughkeepsie, N.Y; two sisters, Anne Craig of Riverside, Calif., and Mary Jane Peters; two grandsons, Bruce and Stephen of Poughkeepsie.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Arms Cemetery in Shelburne Falls.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Boy Scouts of America, 88 Old Windsor Road, Dalton, MA 01226, or Visiting Nurses Association and Hospice of Western New England, 164 High Street, Greenfield, MA, 01301.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Constance Mary Houghton, 75, died in Port St. Lucie on April 1, 2011.

She was born in 1935 in Westfield, Mass. She lived in Greenfield, Mass., and worked as a switchboard operator at the New England Telephone Co. in the Greenfield and Springfield offices until retiring in 1985.

She was the loving wife of Theodore Houghton Jr., who predeceased her on April 9, 2003.

She enjoyed her time visiting family and friends, shopping, movies, museums, dining out, vacations, traveling with her husband.

We will never forget her or her love she shared with us.

Survivors include two sons, Bruce Houghton of Greenfield and Mark Houghton and his wife Racheal of Wappingers Falls, N.Y; a sister, Janet Kowalski and her husband Jerome of Jensen Beach; two grandsons, Bruce and Stephen, and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2011, at Arms Cemetery, Route 2, Shelburne Falls, Mass.
