SOUTH YARMOUTH - Alice Davis (Johnston) Houghton, 95, died Wednesday at Windsor Nursing Home, South Yarmouth, after a brief illness.
She was the wife of the late William Q. Johnston and the late Charles W. Houghton.
Born in Worcester, she graduated from Wernersville High School in Wernersville, Pa., and attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Art and Rockport School of Art. She was a former art instructor and supervisor in the Solanco School District of Lancaster County, Pa.
Mrs. Houghton was an oil painter and had her work shown at the Reading (Pa.) Museum and Art Galleries. On Cape Cod, she had an open studio in South Harwich and exhibited during the summer months at Cape Cinema, Dennis; Monomoy Theater; All Harwich art exhibits; Central Cape Painters at Chatham; and Cape Cod Art Club, Hyannis.
She was a member of First Congregational Church of Yarmouth, Chapel By The Sea in Captiva, Fla., and Oxford Presbyterian Church, where she was an elder Sunday school and Bible school teacher. She enjoyed traveling with her second husband. They participated in 14 elder hostels.
Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth (Johnston) Shaw of Waxhaw, N.C; a stepson, David Houghton of Orleans; a stepdaughter, Jeanne Gray of Spokane, Wash; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service is at 10 a.m. today at Ancient Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. at First Congregational Church of Yarmouth, Route 6A, Yarmouthport.
Memorial donations may be made to Chapel By The Sea. 11580 Chapin Lane, P.O. Box 188, Captiva, FL 33924; to First Congregational Church of Yarmouth, 329 Main St., Yarmouthport, MA 02675; or to Alzheimer's Association, 993 Route 6A, P.O. Box 175, Yarmouthport, MA 02675.
