NORTHUMBERLAND - Ruth G. Houghton, 95, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2008, at Nottingham Village.
She was born Dec. 9, 1912, in the Sunbury hospital, a daughter of Susan and Edgar Willard of Sunbury. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fleming J. Houghton.
Ruth was a 1931 graduate of Sunbury High School.
She held various retail jobs in Sunbury, but eventually settled in with her immediate family and raised two children. After raising her family, Ruth became active and held positions in the Sunbury Community Hospital auxiliary and managed tours for the Northumberland County Area Agency on Aging.
She was a member of United Church of Christ, Second and Chestnut streets, Sunbury, where she taught Sunday school for many years.
Ruth also was a member of the John R. Kauffman Jr. Public Library and the American Association of Retired Persons Inc.
Surviving are two sons, Fred W. and his wife Mary D. Houghton of Dauphin and Robert L. and his wife Pamela Houghton of Rochester, N.Y; six grandchildren, Melissa Ann Houghton of Fort Washington, Md., Michael F. and his wife Jami Houghton of Northumberland, Christopher Houghton of Harrisburg, Jennifer L. Houghton of Rochester, N.Y., Jacquelyn S. Houghton of Rochester, N.Y., and David L. and his wife Andrea Houghton of Syracuse, N.Y; and two great-grandchildren, Brant and Jessa Houghton of Northumberland.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the David T. Zweier Funeral Home Inc., 157 Chestnut St., Sunbury, where the funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday by the Rev. Thomas Dunkle, her pastor.
Burial will be in Pomfret Manor Cemetery, Sunbury.
Contributions may be sent to First Reformed United Church of Christ, Second and Chestnut streets, Sunbury, PA 17801. Flowers may be sent to the funeral home.
