HYANNISPORT - Leona (Deschene) Houghton, 88, died Sunday at Cape Regency Nursing Home, Centerville.
She was the wife of the late Thomas F. Houghton Jr.
Mrs. Houghton was born in Tiverton, R.I. She graduated from Thibodeau's Business School in Fall River and moved with her husband to Cape Cod in 1948.
She was an assistant bookkeeper in the business office at Cape Cod Community College and in the office of Barnstable Public Schools' business manager.
Before retiring in 1991, she was an administrative assistant in the town of Barnstable Department of Public Works Highway Division. After retiring she served the same role at First Baptist Church, Hyannis.
She was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church, Hyannis.
Survivors include a son, T. David Houghton; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Church, South Street, Hyannis.
Burial is private.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Francis Xavier Church, 21 Cross St., Hyannis, MA 02601.¹

Verlene, daughter of John Francis and Jessie Mae (Rice) Houghton, was born on November 5, 1921 in Guthrie County, Iowa. Verlene attended the Wichita Methodist Church as a young girl and was baptized there.

Verlene attended rural school at Seeley No. 6 and Guthrie High School, graduating in 1938. She married Roger Myers in 1940. They divorced having, no children. On September 20, 1947 Verlene married Robert (Bob) Daniel Bailey. After living in California and Colorado for many years where she worked at payroll and bookkeeping, they moved back to Guthrie Center in 1975. They moved to Centerville, Iowa in 1995, returning to live in Perry, Iowa in December of 2009.

Verlene enjoyed reading, crocheting, crafts, and gardening while her health permitted. Verlene and Bob loved camping, fishing, and traveling.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her first husband.

Verlene leaves behind her husband, Robert (Bob), several cousins and their families, nephews, nieces, and her sister in law, Clara Bailey of Centerville, Iowa.

Conrad, IA, USA, CONRAD — Charlotte J. Grimes, 71, of Conrad, died Friday. Aug. 23, ai Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines, of cancer, survivors include her husband. Stanley; two sons, Greg DeSaulniers of Marshalltown and John W. Grimes of Leesburg, Va; a daughter. LeAnn Wolter of West Des Moines; and four grandchildren; she was preceded in death by her first husband. Art DeSaulniers in 1944; services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church, Conrad, with burial in Conrad Cemetery; friends may call until 9 p.m. today at Johnston Funeral Home, Conrad; memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society; Mis. Grimes had served as Worthy Matron of the St. Elmo Chapter No. 398 O.E.S. of Conrad, and was past president of the Past Matrons Club.
