MANCHESTER -- John A. Houghton, Jr., 83, of Manchester, died March 10, 2008, in Catholic Medical Center, Manchester. He was born in Manchester Aug. 6, 1924, to John A. and Julia Veronica (Hartnett) Houghton. He attended local schools and graduated from St. Joseph High School for Boys in 1942. He graduated from St. Anselm College in 1949 and earned his master's degree from Columbia University in New York City in 1952. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in the China-Burma-India theaters. He was a member and past commander of Cyr-Plourde Post 145, American Legion of Frenchville, Maine; Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, andChina-Burma-India Veterans Association. He was an administrator and educator in Maine for more than 40 years before returning to Manchester in 1995. He began his career in Fort Kent as a high school teacher and became administrator in Sanford, Hallowell and Madawaska. He retired as superintendent in Madawaska in 1982 and served for the next 13 years as interim superintendent in several Maine towns.
IN HIS LIFE: He was active in the American Association of School Administrators, National Education Association, Maine Teachers Association and Aroostook County Superintendent Association.
He served as president of the Aroostook County Superintendent Association, the Kennebec County Teachers Association and the Maine State Superintendent Association. He was recognized in 1991 with a distinguished service award by the New England School Superintendent Association. He was a member of St. Anselm College Alumni Association for many years. He was grateful and humbled by the annual presentation of the John A. Houghton Award to a fellow graduate for distinguished service. He held memberships in Sanford Council Knights of Columbus, Sanford Lions Club, Madawaska Lions Club, and Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He served as officer and Exalted Ruler of the Augusta Maine Lodge 964 of Elks. The family includes his wife, Angela (Chamberland) Houghton of Manchester; a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Stephen Abbott of Readfield, Maine; a son, Timothy M. Houghton of Palm Coast, Fla; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Wagner of Manchester; two brothers, Laurence and Paul Houghton of Manchester; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, John E. Houghton; a sister, Anne Houghton LaFortune; three brothers, Thomas, Richard and William; and two infant brothers, James and Joseph.S
Burial, with military honors, will follow in the family lot in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford.
