Audrey Dyer Houghton, 88, of China, passed to the Lord on Dec. 23, 2013, at Inland Hospital in Waterville, following struggles with heart and cancer issues. She was surrounded by the love of family and friends during her last days.

She was born in Waterville on July 14, 1925, daughter of Bradford and Ella (Webb) Dyer. A graduate of Coburn Classical Institute and Colby College, she married Russell E. Houghton, of Boston, on Aug. 18, 1946, at the First Baptist Church, Waterville. During their life together, they lived and taught in Peacham, Vt., Schoharie, N.Y., and Beaver Falls, N.Y., before retiring in 1980 to China, Maine. They were nearing their 60th anniversary when Russ left this earth Aug. 12, 2006.

Audrey loved family, church and school activities. A teacher and homemaker, she also held many volunteer positions in communities and churches. In retirement, she was active in China Baptist Church as a choir member, deaconess, teacher of Women's Bible Study and president of Women's Alliance. Additionally, she was involved with the China Historical Society, Maine and Kennebec Genealogical Services, the RSVP Born to Read Program, and the Maine Fellowship of Christian Writers, which she hosted in her home. She enjoyed writing poetry and had several pieces published.

Audrey is survived by three children, son Bradford and wife Sandra, of Benton, son Robert and wife Betsey, of Plymouth, Mass., and daughter Kathryn and husband Eric Cioppa, of China. She also leaves a special sister, Aldana Dyer Pelletier, of Nokomis, Fla. Blessings have included seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren: Shawn Houghton and wife Heather, of China (and children Jacob, Peyton and Easton), Tammy Lunt and husband Eric, of Fairfield (and children Mason and Gavin), Renee Couture Proulx and husband Michael, of Winslow (and children Coby and Seth Couture), Winslow Houghton and wife Lily, of Moab, Utah, Haley Houghton Oates, of Lansing, Mich., Ryann Cioppa, of Portland, and Zachary Cioppa, of China.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, at China Baptist Church, with pastor Ronald Morrell presiding. Arrangements are under the direction of Lawry Brothers in Fairfield. Burial will be at Webb-Dyer family lot in Hallowell at a later date.

Donations may be made in her memory to the Houghton Memorial Fund for Music, in care of China Baptist Church, P.O. Box 6095, China Village, ME 04926.
