DeathJan 31, 1958IN, USA
BiographyEverett was the son of Thomas Edward “T.E.” Houghton and Elizabeth C. Swigart, who tied the knot on 6 Aug 1887 in Marshall Co., Indiana. The couple had seven children together—May (1888-1894), Earl Lewis (12 Jul 1889), Fern H. (1892-1894), Herbert Russell (26 Feb 1894), Fred Harry (5 Jan 1896), Theodore (Aug 1897), and Everett Chester (7 Jan 1903).

I found the family on the 1900 Census, living in Plymouth, Marshall Co., Indiana. Edward (seemed to prefer as an adult), aged 36, was working as an agricultural agent. Elizabeth, aged 27, reported that she had had six children, but that only four had survived to that census, a sad reminder of the loss of both daughter May at age 6, and daughter Fern at age 2 in 1894. There with their parents were Lewis (aka Earl), aged 10, Herbert, aged 6, Harry, aged 4, and Theodore, aged 2. Son Everett would join the family a couple of years later.

(The Weekly Republican – Thu 12 Nov 1908 p. 1) “Frank Hagar Sells Interest in Music Store to His Partner, T.E. Houghton. Frank Hagar has sold his half interest in the Houghton and Hagar Music store located on Michigan street, to T.E. Houghton, who will continue as sole proprietor. Mr. Hagar will continue in the employ of Mr. Houghton. The deal was made Friday morning.”

Sadly, on 31 Aug 1909, the family lost wife and mother Elizabeth. She had been suffering with gall stones and was eventually claimed by peritonitis. Edward appeared without her on the 1910 Census, widowed, aged 45, living at 301 S. Walnut St. in Plymouth. Edward (T.E. on the record) was noted as a retail merchant of a music store. Still living with their father were Herbert, aged 16, Harry, aged 14, and 7-year-old Everett. And back living with his father and siblings was Everett’s brother Earl, aged 20, who had separated from his wife.

Living with the Houghton family in 1910 was 34-year-old Lillian Davis, noted as the family's housekeeper. About four years after that census, Everett’s father Edward would marry her and they would welcome son Thomas Edward III on 22 Mar 1914. About that same time, Edward appears to have acquired a restaurant.

On 23 Nov 1918, Everett married Ilo Grace Seymour in St. Joseph, Berrien Co., Michigan. He was only 15, but Ilo was 18 and carrying their first child, so Everett stepped up into the role of husband and soon-to-be father. Everett and Ilo had six children together—William Edward (28 May 1919 – 27 Jan 1981), Donald James (1 Nov 1920 – 1 Mar 1974), Josephine “Josie” Elaine (24 Apr 1923 – 20 Feb 1989), Mary Ellen (b. 7 Jun 1925), Richard Seymour (23 Jun 1928 – 13 Nov 2000), and Ruth Ann (b. 3 Sep 1929).

The 1920 Census placed the family on Lake Ave. in Plymouth, Marshall Co., Indiana. Everett Houghton, aged 18, was working as a waiter in a restaurant. Ilo, aged 19, was working as a pastry cook in a restaurant. Son William, was 3 months old.

Happy occasion. (The South Bend Tribune – Thu 11 Jun 1925 p. 9) “Mr. and Mrs. Everett Houghton are the parents of a daughter, born Sunday, June 7. She has been named Maryella.”

Child rearing certainly has its challenges. (The South Bend Tribune – Thu 7 Jul 1927 p. 23) “Donald Houghton, age six, son of Mr. and Mrs. Everrett Houghton was seriously burned Monday when a fire cracker exploded in his mouth.” OUCH!!!

The other five children all joined the family in the following decade. The 1930 Census caught up with them at 617 Lake Ave. in Plymouth. Everett Houghton, aged 27, still had his waiter’s job at the restaurant. Ilo, aged 29, was noted as a baker in a restaurant. There with their parents were their six children—William, aged 10, Donald, aged 9, Josephine, aged 6, Mary, aged 4, Richard, aged 1, and 6-month-old Ruth, aged 6 months. Sounds like busy times for the family.

Unfortunately, the stress of two working parents and six young children took its toll on the household. Sometime in the decade between 1930 and 1940, Ilo and Everett divorced and Everett moved in with his father and step-mother, with whom he appeared on the 1940 Census, living at 822 Garro St. in Plymouth, Indiana. He still had his chef’s position at a restaurant.

For her part, Ilo appeared as head of household on the 1940 Census, renting at 609 Lake Ave. in Plymouth. Ilo, divorced, aged 39, was still working as a pastry cook in a restaurant. The five youngest children were living with her—Don, aged 19, Josephine, aged 16, Mary Ellen, aged 14, Richard, aged 11, and Ruth, aged 10. On or shortly after 29 Aug 1941, Ilo married second-husband Eldon Jay Lehman. (From: Journal and Courier, Lafayette, IN - Tue 30 Sep 1941 pg. 5) “WEDDING ANNOUNCED. Announcement is made of the marriage of Ilo Houghton, of Plymouth, and Eldon J. Lehman of Monticello, which took place Aug. 29 at Rochester, the Rev. Robert Ross Shannon officiated. Mr. and Mrs. Lehman are residing here at 605 South Tippecanoe boulevard. Mr. Lehman is employed as a patrolman with Northern Indiana Public Service company.”

On his 16 Feb 1942 WWII registration, Everett Chester Houghton, 39, reported that he was still at the 822 Garro St. address in Plymouth, and that he was unemployed. Thomas Houghton was noted as that person who would always know his address. He was 5’ 7” tall, weighed 135 lbs., and had brown eyes, black hair and a dark complexion. Also noted was that he was blind in his right eye.

We will get another snapshot of Everett when the 1950 Census is released in 2022. He died eight years later on 31 Jan 1958 at age 55, claimed by lung cancer. He had been working for the State Highway Commission as a street sweeper. Noted on his death certificate was a common-law wife named Vera.
