Mr. John S. "Syd" Houghton III, age 91, of Snellville, Ga, died June 25, 1993. He is survived by Wife, Mary Houghton; daughter, Carol Sue Lamb of Grayson; step-son, David Gruman of Lilbum; grandchildren, Tracy Lamb, Stephanie Beibe; great grandson, V. Mack Belbe all of Grayson. Mr. Houghton, a devoted father and grandfather, eras a native of Cleveland. Ohio and lived for many years in Miami, Fla. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II and a retired commercial driver. Memorial Service will be held Saturday evening. June 26, 1993 at 8 00 p.m. at Wages Snellville Chapel with Rev. Larry Williams officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7 till 9 p.m. at the funeral home Tom M. Wages Funeral Service, Inc., Snellville. 979-3200.

Originally from Tennessee, he was graduated from Wooster College in 1912 and was a World War Ï veteran. He was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity.
He came here from Cleveland where he had been president of the Container Specialty Co. His wife, Harriet (Snyder) Houghton, preceded him in death.
Surviving are a daughter. Mrs. Richard (Mary Anne) Crow of Carmichael. Calif., a son. James F. of Sacramento, and a sister. Mrs. Frank (Helen) Foster of the Virginia Avenue address.

Services are pending at the Connolly and Taylor Chapel, Martinez, for Harley E. Houghton, 85, a native of Kansas, who died Friday in a local convalescent hospital following a recent illness. He was a retired highway maintenance man.
He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Ada Harger of Iowa and Mrs. Essie Bartholomew of Indiana; a son. Arthur of Santa Rosa; a sister, Loretta Smith of Lakeport, and six grandchildren. He was the father of the late Emery Houghton.

Southern Intelligencer-23 Feb. 1859-"Died-Of consumption at the residence of his
brother I.A. Houghton, in Georgetown, Texas, on the 16th instant, Bemjamin S.
Houghton, Esq., late of the New Orleans Bar, in the 31st year of his age. New
Orleans papers please copy. Georgetown, 6th Feb. 1859."
Note: Notice that J.A. Houghton was misspelled as I.A. Houghton. Also,
Benjamin's middle initial was listed as S. in the article. I'm not sure how to read his
death date from this. It seemed to me that he died on the 16th of the month and
that the article was in the Georgetown paper on 6 Feb. 1859. The article made it to
the Southern Intelligencer on 23 Feb. 1859. I wonder if this means that he actually
died on 16 Jan. 1859 and it was reported in Georgetown on 6 Feb. 1859. Until I
know more, I'll use that death date.

Obituary: Texas State Gazette-9 May 1857-"Died of inflammation of the brain at the
residence of his brother, Joel A. Houghton, Esq., Georgetown, Texas, on Saturday,
April 25, 1857, Mr. Robert N. Houghton, in the 17th year of his age. Amiably and
highly intellectual of exalted aims and asperations, bent upon amassing knowledge
for great and useful purposes, he was devoted to study, but-Alas, too intensely for
his finely strung nature. In the early bloom of his high youthful promise-from the
loving care and fond hopes of his devoted relatives, he has been called away (we
humbly trust), to, "The bosom of his Father and his God." New Orleans Delta, and
Lake Providence Herald, please copy."³
