IRENA (nee Coutsoumaris), age 83, Child Psychiatrist, wife, mother, grandmother, friend, healer, died peacefully a Stapeley in Germantown, Phila. on Monday, November 24, 200? after a long decline.Irena Coutsomaris was the only child of Aristotle Coutsoumarh and Anna Melisourgos of Athens Greece. Rena grew up in Athens, and as a teenage during the German Occupation, helped her father smuggle photographic evidence of the genocidal starvation of the Greek people. After the war with only 600 words of English she traveled alone by freighter to the US to attend Barnard College. At New York University Medical School, she was one of 3 women in her graduating class. She did her Pediatric residency training a Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and then trained in Child Psychiatry in Washington DC. She was Clinical Assistan Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Jefferson Medical College, was on staff a Lankenau Hospital and the Devereux Foundation and for years had a private practice ii Bryn Mawr PA. Rena is survived by her husband, Anson Baldwin Haughton-Rev. retired; her children, David Aristotle Haughton M.D., married Lyne Filiatrault M.D., Paul Alexander Haughton Ph.D. maried to Angela Jones Ph.D and Anna Montgomery Haughton Esq; and her grandchildren, Geneva Morgar Demetra Haughton (14), Olivia Rose Haughton (4) and Nicholas Alexander Haughton (2).
A Memorial Service will be held at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, Pennswood & New Gulf Rds, Bryn Mawr on Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at 2 P.M. with a Reception in tht Redeemer Parish House immediately afterwards.In lieu of flowers, please makt a donation to The Americar Farm School of Thessalonik Greece, an independent nonprofit educational institution founded in 1904 to serve the rural population of Greece and the Balkans.
