NoteAug, 1844Adams: "There is little or no doubt that S. G. Haven, late Mayor of Buffalo, is one of the descendants. In a letter of August, 1844, he writes that he has been unable to ascertain which of the sons of richard was his ancestor; that his grandfather, Asa Haven ( which was also his father's name) resided awhile at Bennington, Vermont; afterwards, at Hoosack, and finally at Butternuts, N.Y. where he died. He was probably the son of Josiah Haven who m. his second cousin, Esther Streeter. They were great grandchildren of Richard Haven, through his sons, Moses and Nathaniel...
Since the above was in type, a letter was received from Mr. Haven, in which he experesses a strong conviction that he belongss to the race, and insists on being so represented. He offers some additional reasons of some weight, but unconsciously discloses one, which strikes me very forcibly. He has hitherto declined giving his first and middle names, except by the initials, S. G., and he still persists in using the same signature. He has confessed however, at last, that S. stands for Solomon; but utterly refuses all information as to the import of the middle letter. There is an INDEPENDENCE, (vulgarly called obstinacy,) about this, exactly characteristic of certain branches of the Haven family, particularly my own branch. This will be well understood by those, who know what is meant by "Haven blood." Now it be seen ... that cousin Solomon's grandfather, Asa Haven, and my father, Moses Adams, were orphan cousins, living with their grandfather Elder Joseph Haven of Hopkinton.
The letter closes with a "P.S. I shall want $5 or $10 worth of the 2d edition." This speaks well for the blood. On the whole, it seems clear that cousin Solomon G. Haven is descended from Josiah Haven, and Esther Streeter, both great grandchildren of Richard Haven of Lynn."2

BiographySolomon George Haven (1810 – 1861) was a U.S. Representative from New York and Mayor of the City of Buffalo, New York, serving in 1846–1847. He was born in Guilford, New York on November 27, 1810. He taught school and studied law and on January 10, 1835, moved to Buffalo and finished his studies in the law offices of Fillmore & Hall, the partnership of Millard Fillmore and Nathan K. Hall, later becoming a partner. On May 2, 1838 Haven married Harriett N. Scott. In 1843 he was appointed district attorney of Erie County.[1]

On March 3, 1846, he was elected mayor of Buffalo. During his term, the city charter was amended to give the mayor veto power and the Buffalo Commercial Advertiser was designated as the newspaper of the city. On March 9, 1847, Haven's term as mayor ended.[1]

Haven was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-second and Thirty-third Congresses, and reelected as an Opposition Party candidate to the Thirty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1851 – March 3, 1857). He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1856 to the Thirty-fifth Congress and for election in 1860 to the Thirty-seventh Congress. He engaged in the practice of his profession until his death in Buffalo, New York, December 24, 1861. He was interred in Forest Lawn Cemetery.[2]
