Joseph Haven was born on 4 January 1816 in Dennis, Barnstable Co., Massachusetts to Rev. Joseph Haven.

His parents moved to Amherst, Mass., and he graduated at the college in 1835. For two years he taught in the New York deaf and dumb institution, studying at the same time in Union Theological Seminary. He was graduated at the Andover seminary in 1839, and ordained pastor of the congregational church in Ashland, Mass.

He married Mary Emerson on 23 Sep 1840 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts.

Together they became the parents of Joseph Astor Haven, Elizabeth Haven, Mary Emerson Haven, Alice (Haven) Danforth, Ada (Haven) Mateer, Clara Louisa Haven, Dr Joseph Haven, Charlotte Belle Haven, Ralph Emerson Haven, and George Henry Haven.

In 1846, he accepted a call to the Harvard church, Brookline, Mass. and held this chare until 1850, editing at the same time the "Congregationalist". He was professor of mental and moral Philosophy in Amherst form 1850 to a858, and of systematic theology in the Chicago theological seminary form 1858 till 1870, when he resigned on account of failing health. He then visited Germany Palestine and Egypt, after which he devoted himself to preaching and lecturing upon ancient and modern philosophy and the English classics. in 1873, he became acting professor of mental and moral Philosophy in the Chicago university, which office he held until his death. He was a close student, remarkable for the extent and thoroughness of his scholarship. He received the degree of D.D. from Marietta in 1859 and Amherst in 1862, and that of LL. D. from Kenyon in the latter year. He published "mental Philosophy" (Boston, 1857); Moral Philosophy" (1859); 'Studies in Philosophy and Theology (Andover 1869); and a work on Systematic Divinity," which was completed a few weeks before his death (Boston 1875).

He died on 23 May 1874 in Chicago, Illinois.⁹
