Biography1790 Census lists a Nathaniel Haven and 2 females at Brattleboro, Windham VT. 1830 Census lists him (age 60-70) and wife in Essex Co, NY.

McCoy: "One of the big mysteries in this line concerns Jonathan Uran II's wife, listed in your records as Sally Smith Haven...The mystery is that, while everyone agrees her father was Nathaniel Haven, there are 2 Nathaniel Havens that might be her father, and I think they are confused in the Haven manuscript collection at the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society. Basically, it looks like researchers have identified the 1790 census listing of Nathaniel Haven in Brattleboro, VT with 2 different people. One is the son of Ebenezer Haven of neighboring Dummerston, VT, the other is a son of Clark Haven not otherwise known to have been there. Progeny are lsited for both Nathaniels, some of the information apparently from a Mrs. Crane before 1915. I suspect that researchers were then borrowing pedigrees back and forth, without really proving things."

McCoy: "Information from Haven MSS at NY Gen. & Biog. Soc. seems to have come from a Mrs. Crane, takes the family of Jonathan Uran and Sally Haven down to about 1903, with marriage dates but lacking most spouses' names. While the Uran family information is genuine, the identification of Sally's parents seems problematic. For example, both the 1790 and 1800 censuses would have to be in error, as they show only 1 daughter b. before 1790, but 2 daughters appear in the family record. The source of this record is unknown. While it is clear that Nathaniel and most of his children are associated with
Moriah, NY, we have no direct evidence linking this family to Clark Haven. The marriage record of Nathaniel Haven and Elizabeth Snyder has not been found. There are many other Haven families in Moriah and neighboring towns. none yet identified. Even the birthdate recorded in the Haven MSS is problematic; it presumably derives from a cemetery or bible record, but the record in Hopkinton, MA is a baptism, so the date cannot be matched. The best evidence at this time for parentage is that one daughter was named Polly Flagg Haven, apparently after her grandmother, the wife of Clark Haven."11

ResearchProof that Clarke is the father of the Nathaniel Haven of Brattleboro, VT and Moriah, NY is still lacking. Death and probate records of Hubbardston, MA and Halifax, VT should be searched. Clarke was in Mason, NH in the 1790 census (needs to be checked), and is claimed as a Revolutionary War soldier from Hubbardston, MA.

Nathaniel Haven b. 19oct1766 Hopkinton, MA d. 08aug1847 Middleport, NY (later annotation "or Williamsport"), with children Fanny Wells Haven b. 19jun1781, Sally Smith Haven b. 04oct1789, Polly Flagg Haven 07dec1793, Samuel Townsend Haven 18oct1791 (Brattleboro, VT, or Pawlet VT acc. to "Mrs. Crane"), Betsey Haven 09feb1796, Allen Haven 06mar1798, bringing the Uran line down to about 1903! No sources are given, however.

An entirely different view of this family is obtained from Windham County, VT Probate Records, Marlboro District, vol. 1 p. 42, where the following appears: "At a Court of Probate holden in and for the District aforesaid, present the same Judge--1st pril 1785-- Upon Application made to the said Court by Elizabeth Snider of Brattleborough the said Elizabeth is appointed Guardian of the person and Estate of her Daughter Fanny Snider an Infant aged about four years, until the said Fanny shall arive at the age of fourteen years-- the said Elizabeth is bound in L.20 for the faithful performance of said Trust."

Evidently, this is the same Elizabeth Snider, future wife of Nathaniel Haven, with daughter Fanny Snider by an earlier marriage. Unfortunately the probate records do not seem to contain any other references to the Snider family, nor do we find an appointment of guardian in 1795 when Fanny has reached the age of 14. In light of this information, it becomes easier to explain the absence of Fanny in the 1790 census: she may have been staying with other relatives. Deeds and other records of Brattleboro, if they still exist, may help to clarify this story. One possibility that can be checked is that Mr. Snider may have died during the Revolutionary War. It is likely both were born in NH or MA, or else moved into the area from NY. Descendants of William James Urn, son of Sally Smith Haven Uran, indicate Betsey lived "at Schneider somewhere in NY before the marriage." However, this could be misinterpretation of a passage found in another version, "Betsey Snider of Schneider somewhere in New York", likely intended as "Betsy Snider OR Schneider."

Correspondence of Louisa W. (Haven) Edgerton to Allen Clark Haven, 1868, contained in the Haven MSS collection, shows a family record listig Bestsey Snider b. Holland. But a later biographical sketch of Louisa (Portrait & Biographical Album of Jackson Co., IA, 1889) shows Elizabeth "of German descent". Thus, it appears Louisa was not sure her grandmother was really from Holland. The source of the family record appears to have been the family bible of Louisa's aunt, Polly Flagg (Haven) Williams.
Later correspondence of Dwight Craig Haven with Polly Williams' adopted daughter, Mrs. Mary M. Compton, is also preserved in the Haven MSS, and is consistent with the earlier correspondence.
The name Snider is almost unknown in Vermont and New Hampshire records of that period. It is possible they came from New York, where the name is common, as is suggested by the 1880 census listing for Sally (Haven) Uran, showing parents b. Vermont and New York (however, her father's birth is recorded in Hopkinton, MA). The name Snyder/Schneider is most common in the records of the Dutch Reformed churches of the Hudson Valley. The surviving registers of these churches have been extracted in the IGI, so it mya be possible to locate Fanny's baptism. It is also quite likely that she was named after one of her grandmothers, so Elizabeth's maiden name may be Wells."4,9

Milit-BegJun 24, 1676A Richard Haven of Lynn was a soldier, a sergeant, in King Philip's War, under Capt. Samuel Brocklebank , Marlborough Garrison (as given in George Madison Bodge's Soldiers in King Philip's War. It is unclear whether it was father or son, more likely the latter, given the ages (59 vs 25). Dwight Craig Haven concluded such.
This Richard Haven was paid 1 pound and 10 shillings on June 23, 1676 (after Capt. Brocklebank and most of the company fell in fighting, Apr. 21, 1676).
In "History of Amherst, NH, 1728-1882" by D. F. Secomb, 1883, there is a note that the Haven land grant claim (circa 1741) for service in this war was drawn by Joseph, the son of Richard Haven. This statement points that it was Richard Jr who was the soldier in King Philip's War. Both had sons named Joseph. It is likely that the Joseph, son of Richard Jr, claimed the land, since Joseph, son of Richard, would have been 80 years old.34,35,36,37,38

P. 53: "The Will of Richard Haven
In the name of our Lord God Everlasting, Amen. I, Richard Haven, of Lynn, in the county of Essex, in the Province of Massachusetts Bay, in New England, being aged, and weak of body, yet God of his goodness, affording to me my right understanding, I take this opportunity, to make this My Last Will and Testament, as followeth. I resign up my spirit into the hands of my blessed Redeemer, the Lord Jesus Christ; my body to the earth, to be decently buried, at the discretion of my Executor, hereafter named; and, for my worldy estate, I Will and Bequeath as followeth:
Imp. That all my just and honest debts be duly and honestly paid.
I give to my son John Haven, five punds in good pay, to be paid within two years after my decease, fifty shillings per year.
I give to my son Nathaniel Haven, five pounds in good pay, to be paid within two years after my decease, fifty shillings per year.
I give to my grandson Joseph Haven, the son of my son Richard Haven, deceased, five shillings; the reason I give him no more is because I have given his father considerable before his decease.
I give and bequeth to my son Moses Hven, his heirs and assigns, forever, my dwelling house and barn, and all that lot of land, where my house and barn now stands, excepting only so much as I, in htis my will, give to my daughter Hannah Gooddell; also, I give to my son Moses Haven, his heirs and assigns, two lots of land lying in Rumney marsh, containing eleven acres at the least, with the full and just half of my lot of upland lying in Ramsdell's neck, so called, with all hte privileges and appurtenances belonging to said house and lands, and all my moveable estate not disposed of in this my will; and he to pay all the legacies herein mentioned.
I give and bequeath to my daughter Hannah Gooddell the land her house stands on, and my little orchard, bounded westward by the land formerly Thomas Brown's; southward, by the hightway; eastward, as the fence now stands; northward, within two poles where the barn now stands; my son Moses, to have half the fruit that shall grow upon the pippin tree, in said orchard, for seven years after my decease; and my will is that the yard, that now lies open, shall so remain for the use of both houses; and after the decease of my daughter Hannah Gooddell, then, if my son Moses Hven, or his heirs, shall see cause to pay to the heirs of my daughter Gooddell, the full value of the house my said daughter now lives in, and the land said house stands on, and the said little orchard, as shall be appraised by three indifferent men, if the parties cannot agree about the same, then my will is that the said house, orchard, and land, shall be to my son Moses Haven, and his heirs forever; or else, my will is that the said house, orchard, and land, as it is bounded, shall be to the heirs of my duaghter Hannah Gooddell, and their heirs and assigns, the one full and just half of my lot of upland lying in Ramsdell's neck so called.
I give to my son in law, John Tarbox, one shilling.
I give to my daughter, Sarah Whitney, one cow.
I give to my grandson, Westol Cogswell, one shilling.
I give to my grand-daughter, Hannah Parker, twenty shillings.
I give to my grand-daughter, Hannah Gooddell, my great iron kettle, and one- brass pot, and one pewter platter.
I give ten pounds in pay, to be divided equally among my Moses Hven's children.
I give ten pounds in pay, to be divided equally among my daughter Hannah Gooddell's children, to be paid within four years after my decease.
I give to my son, Nathaniel Haven, all my wearing clothes.
Further, my will is that what legacies I have given in this my will, particularly mentioning pay, that so many of them as my executor shall see cause to pay in money, there shall be one third part abated of the sum that is therein mentioned.
I will and appoint my son, Moses Haven, my lawful and sole executor to this my last will and testament; and, for the confirmation hereof, I, the aforesaid Richard Haven, have set to my hand and seal, this twenty-first day of May, Anno Domini, one thousand seven hundred and one, in the thirteenth year of the reign of our sovereign lord, King William the third of England,&c.

BiographyLewis: "farmer, lived near the Flax Pond."

Savage: "Richard, Lynn 1645, said to have come from W. of Eng. by w. Susanna...he prob. liv. many yrs. more, was freem. 1691 and his will was pro. 14 June 1703...The acco. of descend. of this Richard by Hon. Josiah Adams, 1843, gives 20 for gr. at Harv. and 5 at the other N.E. coll. but not all bear. the surname."

Farmer: "Haven, Richard, came from the west of England, and settled at Lynn 1645, had a wife Susanna...and 12 children."

Adams: "Richard Haven is said, by Lewis & Farmer, to have come from the west of England, and to have settled at Lynn, Mass. in 1645, on a farm near Flax pond. He probably came a year sooner, as his first child was born there in February, 1645. Whether he took a wife in England, or found one here, is uncertain; probably the latter. It is believed that one or more brothers came with him. Mrs. Frail, of Hopkinton, aged 88, says that her father, Benjamin Haven of Framingham, used to say that his great grand-father, Richard Haven, came from England with three brothers, each of whom had four sons. It is probable that the graduates of the name, at Yale College, descended from one or more brothers of Richard; viz. Nicoll Haven, 1753, and Jonathan N. Haven, 1777; and that Charles H. Havens, 1806, and Daniel W. Havens, 1843, are of the same stock, with letter added to the name. John P. Haven, bookseller, N. York, in a letter to the late Horace A. Haven of Portsmouth, writes, that, "Jonathan N. Havens," (spelt Haven in the Col. Cat.)"was of anothe family, whose first ancestor in the country settled on the east end of Lond Island, who, it is said, was a brother of Richard, and came over with him. That family spelt the name with an s." President Dwight says, "the county of Suffolk, L.I., was originally settled from New England. A Considerable number of the colonists were from Lynn." "The property of Shelter Island, principally, belongs to three families, Deering, Haven and Nicoll." (Dwight's Trav. Vol. 3, pp. 307 and 313.) In my researches I have not discovered any appearance of connexion, or even acquaintance, between the diffeent branches.
Little is known of the situation and character of Richard Haven, and nothing of his origin. There is a deed of 13 June 1681, from John Wastol, of Saybrook, Conn. to the children of his "loving kinsman," Richard Haven of Lynn, carpenter; conveying 3000 acres of land in Hebron, Conn., which he had by the will of Joshua Sachem; particularly 1000 acres thereof to John, son of said Richard. It is executed with the marks and seals of the grantor, and SUSANNA his wife, and recorded by the town clerk of Hebron, in 1718, book 1, page 173. It does not appear, by the records, that those lands were conveyed by any of the children. It does however appear, in book 2, page 93, that, in 1726, one Jonathan Page, as heir of Richard Haven had 35 acres set off to him from "Haven's right, it being for land lost." This must have been a grandson of Richard Haven's son Richard.
The Lynn Records show that children were born of RICHARD HAVEN, and SUSANNA his wife, as follows...[12 children listed]...
The mother died at Lynn, 7 Feb'y, 1682. In 1692, it was "Voted that serjeant Haven," and seven others named, "should sit in the Pulpit." He made his will, 21 May, 1701, a copy of which is among the last pages. It was proved, 14 June, 1703."

Havens: "The name HAVENS is derived from the place name Haven, meaning harbor. This word has the same meaning and neraly the same form in other languages: Anglo-Saxon, Haefene; Duth, Hven; Low German, Hven; German, Hafen; Danish, Havn; French, Havre. The addition of "s" gives, in English, a plural form; or, in Welsh, a patronymic, as Williams, i.e., son of William. The tendency early appears to distinguish branches of the family by altering the spelling of the surname. Thus we find in New Jersey alone such variations as Heavens, Havan, Haven, Havans, Havince, Havins. The confusion of Haven and Havens causes considerable difficulty in accurate tracing of lines. Whether Richard Haven, who settled at Lynn, Mass., in 1635-40 and William Havens, who came at about the same time to Pocasset, or Portsmouth, Rhode Island, were brothers or even related is still undetermined and will probably never be known.
The earlist historical mention of the surname Havens in America occurs in the account of the establishment of the government of Portsmouth (Indian name, Pocasset) on Rhode Island in Narrangansett Bay. William Havens came to America from Aberystwith, Cardiganshire, Wales, if tradition is correct, and joined the settlement established by the folowers of Roger Williams. In 1638 he was admitted as an inhabitant of the island of Aquidneck..." [see Havens, for New Jersey Havens genealogy, and Savage, p. 379]

Haven: "one Richard Haven, house-carpenter, from the west of England, and landed at Boston, whence he subsequently removed to Lynn...Of the precise time of our ancestor's arrival in this country, nothing is known with certainty. It has been generally supposed that he came in 1644; but of this there is no conclusive evidence. It is stated on the authority of Lewis and Farmer tht he settled at Lynn, in 1645. It is also known that before settling in Lynn he endeavored to establish himself at his trade in Boston, where it is said he was offered two acres of land on Cornhill, in part pay for building a house; a condition not to his liking. How long he lived in Boston before going to Lynn we do not know. His first child, it seems, was born in 1645; but this surely does not prove, at least according to the ordinary rules of logic, that he came to this country the year before. On the other hand there are some things which indicate an earlier arrival. I have already stated that emigration to this country had almost entirely ceased by 1640. Very few persons came over during the next five years after that...Another ting favors the supposition that he came previous to 1644. It is known that certain brothers of Richard came to this country, and settled on Long Island. Now we find that in 1639, a number of persons in Lynn, finding themselves straitened for room there, undertook a settlement on Long Island, at the western end, whence, on account of difficulties with the Dutch, they removed, shortly after, to the eatern part. They seem at that time to have been increased by a number of families additional from Lynn, where before going, they first formed themselves into a church, and drew up the outline of a civil government. As the name Haven subsequently occurs among the names of the principal proprietors of estate on the island, it seems reasonable to suppose that those brothers of Richard formed a part of the originl colony. If so, they must have ben in the country previous to 1640; and not improbably Richard came over with them, he staying awhile in Boston, while they settled at first in Lynn* [Since the above was written, I find in Lewis's History of Lynn, a work of rare merit as regards its detils of the olden time, the name of Richard Haven among those who settled in that town about 1640, which fully verifies what, for reasons above stated, I had been led to conjecture.]
The name Haven does not occur in the list of Freemen inserted in the Appendix to Winthrop's Journal, which includes those admitted form the first settlement of th Massachusetts Colony, till the death of Governor Winthrop, in 1649..."; p. 7, "It is doubtful whether he was of age when he came over. Tradition says he was in England a poor boy, bound out as apprentice to a master; that his master dying, and his mistress undertking to carry on the business, it fared ill with Richard, as not unfreqeuntly happens in such cases. He accordingly acted as any sensible young man would have done, --that is, he ran away, and so came to this country, a pilgrim father, on his own hook."

McCoy:
"Haven MSS#1 came to Lynn in 1645, settled on a farm near Flax Pond. In the earliest references, this Richard Haven is referred to as "Jr.", but after 1655 he becomes "Sr." This could indicate that his father was also named Richard, and that the latter died about 1655. Reference numbers from Haven MSS in possession of New York Genealogical & Biographical Society have been added for all descendants of Richard Haven. These MSS are heavily annotated but with few sources given, often very difficult to read, with some obvious internal contradictions."

Barry: "Richard Haven came from the W. of England, and settled at Lynn, in 1645, on a farm near Flax Pond. It is supposed that he had brs. who emigrated to N.E."
