| Also Known As | Martha Elizabeth Cox was also known as Martha Elizabeth Snelson. |
| Occupation | She was a Housemaid. |
| Biography | The marriage certificate states that he was a joiner and that they were both living in Hunter Street in July 1860. Hunter Street is coincidentally perhaps directly opposite Margaret Street in the centre of Sydney, the two streets being almost dissected by the main street .... George Street. He was 27 years old and she was 23. The passenger lists show Martha as being aged 20, a housemaid and that she was born in Stokehaven or some such place in Somerset; so I have assumed that she did not embark with John Snelson, rather she met him on the ship. The lists reveal that she must be the same Martha Cox who married John as the names of her parents are given as James and Betsey (sic) Cox of Mather ( ? ) Street, Bath in Somerset. She was given as Church of England and she could read and write. They lived near Singleton at Belford or Jerry's Plains until 1872 - presumably because this was where brother Peter had settled. The names of her parents tally with those on her marriage certificate, James Cox, butcher, and Betty Purnell.
I have a photograph of husband John taken at his Golden Wedding celebrations - presumably fifty years after their wedding in 1860. She died in 1919 aged 82 and is buried along with John in Gulgong Cemetery. My wife, Georgina found Martha's grave when we visited Gulgong. They are buried less than a kilometer from Broad Oak. The gravestone says that she was 82 when she died. [:CR:]. |
