| Also Known As | Margarett Snelston was also known as Margarett Cotton. |
| Also Known As | She was also known as Margarett Winnington. |
| User Reference Number | She; 6717 |
| Birth | She was born in 1530 She is cited as the daughter and heiress of Thomas Snelston in the Visitation of Gloucestershire. The only handle I can get on the dates of these events is that Margarett's grandson was aged 19 years in 1589; I suggest therefore that she may have married say at the age of 25 years and if grandson Richard Cotton was born about 1570, then this would put Margarett's birthdate in the region of 1520 or so. That's the best I can do at the moment. Nevertheless, this is a major discovery because it represents what I believe to be the vital linkage which has alluded us all for so long. The clue lies in the Arms cited for Cotton in Harl. MSS 1041, fo.52; 1543, fo. 38b, 72b - and I give it verbatim below
ARMS.-Quarterly-1, Azure, a chevron between three cotton hanks argent, COTTON; 2, Argent, a chevron between five crosses-crosslet fitchee, two in chief and three in base, sable, SIDENTON; 3, Argent, on a bend engrailed sable three fleurs-de-lis of the first, HOLT; 4, Argent, a scythe sable, SNELSTON; over the whole a crescent for difference.
CREST.-A falcon close argent, beaked and belled or, holding in the dexter claw a belt buckled of the second; a crescent for difference.
Richard de Sidenton is her husband's great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather. Sir Richard Holte is also her husband's great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather through another parallell line. The point of course is that Snelston is marshalled into the Cotton achievement and more importantly the great-great-great grandmother of the last Snelston heiress ( Margarett daughter and heire of Thomas Snelston ) was the daughter and heiress of Sir William Baguley whose arms are noted as being, and again I quote
ARMS.-Or, three lozenges azure. Eureka ! Game, set and match ! This is the third coat on the Macclesfield Chalice arms as per Roger the Dyer.
She appears also in the Winnington of the Hermitage pedigree given on page 208/209 of The History of the Ancient Parish of Sandbach by Earwaker. Here its says that Margaret was the daughter and co-heir of Thomas Snelson of Snelson, Cheshire. She married firstly Hugh Winnington and secondly Richard Cotton of Whittingham and had issue John Cotton of Whittingham living in 1589 who had a son Richard Cotton then aged 19 ( Harl MSS 2,119 ). Also, and this may just be a coincidence, there is a mention in the Noethenden Deeds of a Richard Cotton and his wife Margaret in 1497/98 - and a mention of an Oliver Snelston. [:CR:].2 |
| Biography | Margaret Snelson co-heiress is born to Thomas Snelson later to marry Hugh Winnington. (Ref. ‘History of Sandbach’ Earwaker). |
