| Biography | According to the AIF Service Abroad records for the 1914-18 War at the Society of Australian Genealogists ( and at the State Library of NSW ), Henry or "Harry" Edward Snelson was a SPR ( sapper ? ) A.C. Slg. Coy " . He was enrolled from 21 Feb 1917 to 18 Jul 1919. Harry was remembered by Gulgong Real Estate agent, Jack Gillam, and his son. Their agency is in the village and they kindly gave me a map of the environs showing Harry's block 414 which they indicated was now owned by Mr. Ridout. This property is situated on the Home Rule Road, behind the kaolin works at the Three Mile Creek Junction. Before finding this for me on the map, they both said that Harry's place was down the Canadian Lead road ( Canadian Lane ) - the road that goes to the Canadian Lead Gold body; these are blocks 164, 165 and 154 adjacent to the "Coming Event" lead, gold diggings and mine. Aren't these great names for the goldfields ? Gina and I went and took a photograph of it and block 414. We returned on the next day after getting a map from Mudgee Shire Council which showed the three blocks held by John Snelson situated behind and to the East of the Cemetery. We met a nephew of Mr. Ridout who had heard of Harry Snelson some 20 years ago. This is really beautiful country. I think Broad Oak is the property #164, #165 and 154. I also think that block #414 belonged to Harry Snelson - and it was this latter property that gave rise to the naming of Snelson's Lane. According to Wallace Peter Snelson who visited Broad Oak on 3rd September 1989 when there was a polocrosse game on the paddock over the lane, the place ( Broad Oak ) had been sold by Harry Snelson and became an addition onto another place. The buildings were in disrepair and a sorry sight to what he had known in his childhood. As Wallace muses, such is progress - bigger paddocks, bigger machines, less people. When we visited the Gulgong Pioneers Museum, we found a photograph of the 1905 Gulgong Rifle Club. Harry is second from the right on the back row. I now have a copy of the same photograph, a really remarkable reproduction directly from the negative, thanks to Mrs. Janet Parkins, Manageress of the Museum. Phone Number (063) 74-1513. [:CR:]. |
