| Note | Obituary
Death of Great Charity Worker
A deservedly popular lady and a splendid worker for charity movements. Miss Martha Snelson, of “Broad Oak,†Gulgong, passed away at the residence of Mrs. Bertha Watt, of Herbert Street, recently, aged 83 years.
Known as “Matron†Snelson because of the long valued and efficient service she gave as matron of the District Hospital for many years up till the time of her retirement some years before the last World War, deceased started her career by taking up nursing at the institution. Later, she joined the staff of Cobar Hospital, then returned to become matron of the local hospital. She was held in the highest possible regard by the medical officers, the hospital staff (both nursing and domestic), the patients and the whole community in general. Her manner bright; her nature sweet and lovable.
She was a wonderful inspiration to everyone and was deeply interested in the welfare of the hospital and various organisations, including her Church, the Country Women’s Association, Red Cross Society - to mention a few. With her late sister, Miss Ann Snelson (also a wonderful worker for worthwhile causes), “Matron†was a foundation member of both the C.W.A. and Red Cross. A few years ago she was presented with the Red Cross Society’s Long Service Medal.
She lived the life of a real christian woman. There would never be any wars in the world if all people had the beautiful disposition, character and lady-like qualities the late “Matron†Snelson had. She took a delight in being kind and considerate to aged people and children. Her reward was the joy she gave them and she wanted nothing better. Though a noble woman has gone to her reward the influence of her fine example will live for many a long year. The goodness which she graciously showered on people by kindly attention in times of trouble or sickness will never be forgotten by those who are still alive today.
Deceased is survived by a brother, Mr. H. E. Snelson, of “Broad Oak†and some relatives. A brother, Mr. Percy Snelson, of the same address, died some years ago. Our sincere sympathy is extended to the bereaved. |
