    MONTEZUMA - Roland S. Janes, 94, passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at Highland Hospital.

    Roland was born in Montezuma, educated in Syracuse and lived all of his life in Montezuma. He was a W.W.II veteran of the Navy and a member of the Cayuga Masonic Lodge, the Montezuma Methodist Church and the American Legion.

    Roland is survived by his children, Phyllis Janes of Atlanta, Ga., Leigh Janes of Grand Rapids, Mich. and Robert Janes of Webster; two granddaughters, Tamara Dougherty of Saratoga and Jennifer Dunn of Clyde; three grandsons, Michael Totten of Denver, Colo., Thomas Janes, serving in the US Navy and Nicholas Janes traveling the United States and six great-grandchildren.

    Friends may call noon to 2 p.m. Monday at the Colvin-Norton Funeral Home, Savannah where services will follow at 2 p.m.

    In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

    Abraham, one of 11 children born to William Van Giesen (1769-1841) and Elizabeth "Betsy" Spier (1772-1858), was born in Acquackanock Township, Passaic County, New Jersey. Abraham's parents were married in Acquackanonk Township in 1793 and started their family there. In the early 1800s they moved to Mentz, Cayuga County, New York and then in the 1820s they relocated to Savannah, Wayne County, New York.

    Abraham married Cornelia Ketchell on January 16, 1820. They were the parents of eight known children:

    1) Caroline Van Giesen (1822-1911), who married Myron Doty, (buried in Fort Hill Cemetery, Auburn, Cayuga County, New York);
    2) William Van Giesen (1826-1918), who married Eliza "Ann" Freeman, (buried in Wahjamega Cemetery);
    3) Mary Eliza Van Giesen (1828-1897), whose first husband was Augustus Howell, and whose second husband was Elijah Gibbs, (buried in Wahjamega Cemetery);

    Abraham, one of 11 children born to William Van Giesen (1769-1841) and Elizabeth "Betsy" Spier (1772-1858), was born in Acquackanock Township, Passaic County, New Jersey. Abraham's parents were married in Acquackanonk Township in 1793 and started their family there. In the early 1800s they moved to Mentz, Cayuga County, New York and then in the 1820s they relocated to Savannah, Wayne County, New York.

    Abraham married Cornelia Ketchell on January 16, 1820. They were the parents of eight known children:

    1) Caroline Van Giesen (1822-1911), who married Myron Doty, (buried in Fort Hill Cemetery, Auburn, Cayuga County, New York);
    2) William Van Giesen (1826-1918), who married Eliza "Ann" Freeman, (buried in Wahjamega Cemetery);
    3) Mary Eliza Van Giesen (1828-1897), whose first husband was Augustus Howell, and whose second husband was Elijah Gibbs, (buried in Wahjamega Cemetery);
    4) Hannah Van Giesen (1830-1910) who married Franklin Fairman, (buried in Wahjamega Cemetery).;
    5) John Gay Van Giesen (1831-1903), who married Samantha Santee, (buried in Demorest Cemetery in Akron, Tuscola County);
    6) Charles Van Giesen (1833-1920), who married Lidelia "Delia" Julia Kelsey, (buried in Wahjamega Cemetery);
    7) Elizabeth Van Giesen (1835-1899), who married Benson Haskins, (buried in Wahjamega Cemetery);
    8) Lydia Van Giesen (1839-1922), never married, (buried in Fort Hill Cemetery, Auburn, Cayuga County, New York).

    Abraham died in Tuscola County, Michigan at the age of 66 years.
