He was commonly known as Howie.1
The following article appeared in the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Star-Phoenix, 12 July 1945 :
Si. James Church Is Scene Of Rice-Gregory Ceremony
St. James' Anglican Church was the scene of a lovely June wedding when Florence Dorothy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. G. Gregory, of Saskatoon, was united in marriage to Flt. Lt. Howard W. Rice, son of Mr. and Mr. W. J. Rice of Asquith, Sask., the Rev. J. C. Wardlow of Melfort, Sask., officiating.
The bridal party entered the church to the strains of the wedding march played by Mr. Allan Johnson. The bride, given in marriage by her father, looked charming in a floor-length gown of white satin fashioned with applique panel, sweetheart neckline and lily point sleeves. Her floor-length veil fell from clusters of white flowers, and she carried a bouquet of red and white roses and white larkspur. Her only ornament was a string of pearls the gift of the groom.
The maid of honor, Miss Frances Gregory, sister of the bride, wore for the occasion a floor-length gown of pink sheer, with quilted metallic jacket and matching chapel veil caught with clusters of blue flowers. Her bouquet was of yellow and white snapdragons and pink carnations. Miss Bernice Johnston, as bridesmaid, wore a long gown of blue sheer, a headdress in the same shade, and carried a bouquet of yellow and white snapdragons and pink carnations.
The groom was attended by Fit. Lt. Norman Altic of Claresholm, Alberta, and the ushers were Mr. T. Wilson of Saskatoon, and John Wheeler of Mullingar. During the signing of the register Miss Mae Tinker sang “Because.”
Following the ceremony a reception was held in the Winston Room of the King George Hotel, where, receiving with the bridal couple, were Mr. and Mrs. F. G. Gregory, parents of the bride, and Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Rice, parents of the groom. Mrs. Gregory received in a two-piece dress of pale turquoise blue with white accessories, while the groom’s mother appeared in navy and white jersey with matching accessories. Both wore corsages of pink carnation.
Rev J. C. Wardlow proposed the toast to the bride, to which the groom ably responded.
The table was centred with a three-tiered wedding cake embedded in pink tulle, and flanked by vases of flowers. Presiding over the table were Mrs J. M. Toothill and Mrs. C. Hanna, both aunts of the bride. The serviteurs were Mrs. A. Marlow, Mrs. T Wilson, Miss M. Hale, Miss G. Shirping, Miss B. Fritz and Miss T. Newport.
The happy couple were guests at The Bessborough prior to their departure for Waskesiu. The bride travelled in a two-piece dress of pink wool topped with a three-quarter length beige coat with brown and pink accessories. Her corsage was of roses.
Out-of-town guests at the wedding were Mrs. F. Gregory and Mr. and Mrs. C. Hanna of Raymore; Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Toothill and Miss Joan Toothill, Regina; Mr. and Mrs. R. Rice, Mr. and Mrs. G. Rice and Mr. and Mrs. L. Johnston, Asquith, Mr. and Mrs. B. M. Reid, Duro, and Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Debenham of Watrous.6
