Biography

Enoch Freeman Whitehouse was born in 1830 in Gonic, Rochester, Strafford County, New Hampshire.2,3

Enoch Freeman Whitehouse married Mary Abbie McDuffee, daughter of John A. McDuffee, Jr., and Joanna [or Johanna] Hanson, on 3 December 1861.1,2

Enoch Freeman Whitehouse died on 28 August 1865 in sea, when he was drowned near the Isles of Shoals, off the New Hampshire coast, at age 35, at age ~35.2

Enoch Freeman Whitehouse was buried in Gonic Village Cemetery, Rochester, Strafford County, New Hampshire.3

From the Lewiston [ME] Daily Journal of 31 August 1865:
The Sad Accident
We recorded a day or two since in our telegraph columns the death by drowning of Mr. E. Freeman Whitehouse and Geo. W. McDuffie, Esq., of Rochester, N. H. Mr. Whitehouse will be remembered as the leader of the popular Whitehouse Bards, who a few years since gave concerts in this city. His age was about 34, and he leaves a widow. Mr. McDuffie was a leading citizen of Rochester [NH], and a near relative of Mr. J. W. McDuffie of this city [Lewiston, ME]. The accident happened near the Isle of Shoals off the New Hampshire coast. We have the following particulars: “They left Portsmouth [NH] on Monday in a sailboat for a fishing excursion and landed at the Shoals in the afternoon. They returned to their boat in the evening and were not afterwards seen until about 11 o'clock Tuesday when, three miles southeast of the Shoals, schooner Rebecca N. Atwood, Capt. John Maskell, of Rockport, Mass., discovered their boat on its beam ends, with the body of one man (Mr. McDuffie) suspended by the right arm from the gunwales, and of the other (Mr. Whitehouse) in the rigging. On righting the boat, the body of Mr. McDuffie disengaged, and suddenly disappeared. On the body of Mr. Whitehouse was found a gold watch and a sum of money. The watch ceased to move at 4 o'clock indicating that happened in the morning at about that time. The anchor and a portion of the cable were missing, and it is believed that the boat while moored near Star Island was run down by some vessel in the impenetrable darkness of the night and resulting in the untimely end of its occupants.”.4
